Question about Seagate (ST3160203U2-RK) (ST3160203U2RK) 160 GB Hard Drive

How to open case: Seagate ST3160203U2RK External Hard Drive ??

I have a Seagate (Model: ST3160203U2RK, Part: 9BD862-560) External Hard drive, 160Gb. The drive won't power on at all - no green light. We've tried another AC adapter with no luck. I want to open the case, remove the drive, and put it in another external case. My question is: How do I open the case ?

There are 4 5-pointed star shaped screws on the bottom of the drive. I don't know how to open the case.

Any ideas??

Thanks for the help. I forgot to mention that I purchased a 'star' socket set. However, the hole was too deep for the socket. I played around with a slotted screw driver for awhile, but didn't make any progress.
So, I decided to crack open the case. It took awhile, but I finally got it open last night.
The good news?! .... the hard drive appears to be fine, and all the data is now backed up !

2 things about this experience really surprised me:
    - That Seagate would design an external drive that a customer can't open.
    - That Seagate wouldn't publish a Service Manual, explaining how to open the silly case.

In their greed to get my 'Data Recovery' money, they've turned me off to their products !

This is one of the mean tricks that the industry uses to discourage people from opening things and then totally ruining them.

What about getting yourself a 5-star-shaped screwdriver? Ask your hardware store guy.

Too expensive? Well - I have a lot of different simple slotted screwdrivers. Normally I find one that fits into 2 corners of these "miracle screws". If you don't have fitting one use a cheap one that is slightly too large to fit and grind it down just to size.

The same trick works with the other kind of "discouragement screws" that have ALMOST a normal slot --- but there's an elevation in the middle of it. A slot screwdriver with a ground-in **** in the middle (Dremel tools work fine) does the trick.

Oh... I just see the bashful system replaced one word I used by ****. The word was like "slot" but replace the "o" by an "i".

Seagate,external, Hard drive,160GB,knocked over,doesnt work

Buy a new drive. The beeps are coming from the hard drive and they say I'm broken. If you need to recover data, and only if you need it like life and death because it will cost a bit, send it to a data recovery company. I would search on line and look for somebody local to you for this if you need it.

As for your old drive, if you like to tinker, you may be able to remove the drive from the case and replace it with a similar sized drive with a matching interface (ide or sata). I personally like to remove the rare earth magnets from bad drives to make refrigerator magnets and toss the aluminum housing into the metal recycling barrel. It also ensure personal data is never coming off those platters.

External hard drive wont stay connected to computer

This depends where the failure is.

If your controller board for the external casing or your power supply have failed the drive can be removed from the casing and placed in a new one($30-$40), then it should work fine. If the circuit board on the hard drive or an internal circuit for the drive has failed then you may require the help of a pro.

When you say lock the drive are you asking to lock access to the drive entirely when you disconnect it from your computer no one can access your files if they find the drive and try to put it on their computer and open it,
