Only turns on in play mode and wont take photos

I can only get the camera to turn on in play mode and then when you turn it to any other mode it turns off. I have tried numerous types of batteries and no luck. Any help?

Can only view play mode. If I want to take a picture in any mode all I have is a black screen and am unable to take any pictures. Camera is useless at this point. Ive tried everything too, including new batteries. Any ideas?

I hv the same issue. Perhaps, from leaving out in the cold... No solution other than to send it in for repair, which is cost prohibitive. Time for a new camera, unfortunately.

My panasonic tz5 has started playing up. The lens moves in & out, will not focus & a message 'please turn camera off and on again' appears. This happens each time I want to use it. The battery is charged....

Same problem. At least for now, I solved problem, or at least camera is working again, by putting mode dial in "normal" (not A1) and holding down menu and down button (macro button) while turning camera on. Hope it works for you and continues to work for me.

It won't take a photo with flash

Ah! I just figured it out. I read that the image stabilization doesn't work as well with a flash, so I turned it off. While in camera mode (not play mode), hit Menu, then scroll down to IS Mode. There are a few options. I chose "Off." And I was immediately able to take a photo. I'll play around with the other options (Continuous, Shoot Only, Panning). Now my only problem is that I JUST changed the batteries about 10 minutes ago and it's already telling me to change them again. Ug.

Wont take photos outside

The symptoms you're describing could be caused by either the "Fireworks" special scene selection mode, or manual mode with too much exposure compensation. Look at your mode selector (back of the camera, upper left hand corner). Is the mode set to the still image setting (pointing at the liittle red camera)? Or is it set to special scene selection (SCN)?

If you are unintentionally in SCN mode, to get it out of "Fireworks", just turn the mode selector dial to select "still image" (pointing at the little red camera). Or you can also select an SCN mode more appropriate for outdoors. Just turn the dial to SCN, press the FUNC button, then press the left/right arrow buttons to select Portrait, Beach, Snow etc...

But if your mode selector is already in still image selection, then check to make sure that you're not in "Manual" picture mode. Turn the mode selector dial to "still picture mode" (pointing at the little red camera), then press the "FUNC" button. Now look at the bottom of the screen. If it says "Manual", press the "left" button controller once to select and put the camera in "Auto" still picture mode.

Flash can not be turned on

I had the exact same problem as Dude2891 and it took me ages to work out what was wrong. The problem turned out to be that when I first got it and was playing with the menus, I managed to put it on burst mode, and in burst mode flash is automatically set to off. So you need to turn it on, press menu bottom left and scroll to REC mode (the first option) and then check that you're on Normal not Burst. That fixed it for me! See also Sony's tips at

Hope that works guys, let me know how you get on.

Can you play back pictures and is the quality of these ok ? If you can but there is no image in capture mode then the CCD sensor is faulty and needs replacing.
