Hello,

Adjust contrast : Hold down [C] key and press [+] to increase contrast or [-] to decrease it.**Diagnostic tests (from the Users manual)**

1. Hold down [C] key and press [LN]; may have to repeat several times.

2.
Press and hold down [C] key and press and hold down both the square
root key AND the Sigma + key. When all keys are released, MEMORY CLEAR
is displayed.

3. Remove batteries and lightly press a coin against both battery contacts in the calculator. Iy should say MEMORY CLEAR.

If these steps fail to restore calculator operation, it requires service.

Hope it helps.

Your calculator is fine. It is an adding machine first, so it uses adding machine logic and you hit the star button to print the total on the tape. The equals sign is only used when multiplying and dividing.

Adding machine logic is as follows:

5+ total 5

3- total 2

7+ total 9

* print out total

Good luck,

Paul

Sorry but you are using the word EQUATION incorrectly. All you have is two numbers you want to divide one by the other.

Enter the numerator 1EE (-) 14, press the division key / then enter the 5 EE (-) 12. Press the = sign.

Note: to enter the negative sign in the exponents, use the change sign key marked**(-), (+/-) or [+/-] **. Do not use the regular MINUS sign.

When you use the EE key, you must not enter the 10. It is understood because EE is a shortcut for***10^**.

You'll get the same error if you try to divide two matrices with real numbers. The TI-89 doesn't allow you to divide a matrix by another. However, you can multiply a matrix by the reciprocal of the other.

For example, to calculate A/B, calculate instead A*B^-1 . Makes sure you use the (-) key just to the right of the decimal point key to put in the negative sign before the "1".

Unless your calculator is wrong the answer is 8. but I think you wanted to ask that the calculator gave wrong results. If so remove and clean the pads, warm off the pads, clean battery contacts and reset.
