The latest version of Garmin Express provides the ability to install a map update directly to an SD card.
The SD card installation option will only appear when updating a compatible device that does not have sufficient internal memory for the largest allowable map region. When using the SD card installation option, critical files are loaded to the SD card so it must remain in the device after the update to ensure full functionality. For the largest size SD card a device can use, refer to: What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?
The SD card support during the map update will only function with up-to-date software. It may be necessary to update the device's software with Garmin Express prior to updating the maps. These devices do not support the SD card option:
nuvi 300 series
nuvi 500 series
nuvi 600 series
nuvi 800 series
nuvi 805 series
For devices that do not support using the SD card with the map update application, any maps that do not fit in the internal memory can be installed to the SD card manually, using these instructions:
To update your garmin satnav map you must have your satnav registered. If it's already registered skip to paragraph 2 below.
1. To Register your Garmin Satnav
Connecty our satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
Select your country
Click on Register your garmin product
Follow the prompts
Note you will be asked to create a username and password. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again anytime you want to update your maps 2. To update your maps
Connect your satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
Click on myGarmin and log in
Click on myMaps.
If there's an update available it will be shown beside the name of your map.
Click on Get Update and follow the prompts.
Note map files are large so you'll need a broadband connection to download them. If you don't have broadband you'll have an option to buy the update on DVD.
If The Map Is Too Large To Install To Your Satnav When you go to download the map by default it tries to download it to the satnav i.e. not the SD/Mini SD card. You need to change this. When the website recognises the satnav follow the prompts. It will give you 3 options for the download destination.
Download to satnav,
Download to Computer and Satnav or
Download to computer.
As the website is updated, from time to time, the method of selecting the download destination changes. Sometimes it shows up as a drop box with a drop-down arrow showing your satnav name. Click the drop-down arrow and select the option to download the map to your computer. Sometimes it shows the 3 options as text headings with tick boxes beside them and you get to tick the option you want. Whichever way it shows up select the option to download the map to your computer. This will install it on your computer's hard drive.
After it's downloaded the map should begin to install automatically. (If not double click on it and it will). It should be allowed to install to your satnav first as Garmin will not allow it to install to your SD/Mini SD card unless it's first partly installed to the satnav. This is so they can ensure that it's installed to the correct satnav.
To Install The Full Map To Your SD/Mini SD Card To install the map to your SD/Mini SD card, insert the card into the card slot of your satnav and connect it to the computer. Click the windows start button on your computer. Then click the GARMIN progam and then MAPINSTALL. This runs the map installation program. When the install program finds your satnav and you get the option to install the map there again by default. Click on the drop-down arrow, where it shows your satnav as the destination, and select the drive letter of the SD/Mini SD card. This will be different to the drive letter for your satnav. The map will then be installed to your SD/Mini SD card.
Problems With Older Nuvi Satnavs Reading Maps On 4 Gb Or Higher SD Cards When you install a map to an SD card older nuvi satnavs can have difficulty getting the satnav to read it. It will install to it without problem but when you try to operate the satnav then it cannot load the map and will close down the satnav unless you remove the SD card. The reason for this is that 4 Gb and higher cards are SDHC which operate differently from SD. To solve this problem you should use a class 2 SDHC card, which is the slowest type available. You can identify the class by the small figure on the card. It will be either 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10. Before you install the map format the card as described below. Also use webinstaller to check that you have the latest version of operating software on your satnav.
Format the SD card with "Panasonic SD Formatter" available from http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter20.html rather than the standard windows format function. Select the fast format option and be sure you have selected the drive letter of your SDHC card as it will format your hard drive or indeed your satnav just as easily if you select one of them by mistake.
The internal memory of the nuvi is full. Some maps will need to be delete before any new maps can be added. Typically, the map in the nuvi is named GMAPPROM.IMG and a map installed to an SD (or SDHC) memory card is named GMAPSUPP.IMG.
1) Remove the SD card from the memory slot
2) Connect the nuvi to the computer via USB cable.
3) Open the nuvi drive.
4) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s). Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case there is a problem wit the new map file(s).
5) Empty the Recycle Bin.
6) Retry the map update of the nuvi.
This method will take some time to perform depending on how many map segments you are sending to the nuvi. Transferring the entire map can take over an hour. A quicker way is to send the maps to the SDHC card directly by inserting the card into a card reader. This eleminates the slow Garmin card reader from the equation and transfers are done in a fraction of the time. No maps will be on the nuvi - they will all be on the memory card instead. To update the SD or SDHC card, do this:
1) Repeat steps 1 thru 5 above. This removes the maps files from the nuvi.
2) Disconnect the nuvi from the computer.
3) Connect a card reader to the computer.
4) Insert the SD or SDHC card into the reader.
5) Locate and delete the GMAPPROM.IMG (or GSUPPROM.IMG) file(s).
Optionally copy (instead of deleting) them to your hard drive in case
there is a problem wit the new map file(s).
6) Update the map to the SD or SDHC card.
When either method is employed, only one map file set will result. GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG is the name of this file set. You should ensure / change the name to GMAPPROM.IMG. Any subsequent file set added should be named GMAPSUPP.IMG.
I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks.
Hi Iam in the same boat - need to up date uk and maps for France. Down loaded french maps last year on toan SD card but they now appear to have gone! Can buy a pre loaded card from tele maps but it £68!!!!
No. They are refering to maps sent from the computer to the Garmin device. Maps are not transferred off the SD card to the unit. Simply insert the SD card into the device and the Garmin will read the maps from the card.
to double check follow these steps
Power on the unit with the card in
Press Info (or map info)
This page should list out both your UK and Ireland maps(old as dirt) and your new Benelux and France maps as well
I'm quite sure you need to purchase the 2009 City Navigator SD card to update the maps. That what I did last year to get the 2008 City Navigator maps. You will need to leave the SD card in the unit to use the new maps though..
I haven't been able to determine whether it's possible to update the actual install map on the device. I'm guessing it's possible but would require a computer and an map update to write directly to the device. If I find steps to update the installed maps, I will post them here.
(Untried) For C330 owners that want to have both Canada and US 2008 map update on their GPS this is what you have to do.
Must have: 1 - Street pilot C330 2 - 512mb SD card 3 - SD card reader of some form (some cameras will suffice) 4 - Garmin 2008 Map Update North America
What to DO:
1 - connect the GPS to the computer 2 - Insert the Map update disk 3 - Install the Lower 48 states, United States (Reason - the C330 has around 1000mb of memory and the "US 48 states" map uses around 900mb" while Canada uses 400mb...which is why you will need that 512mb SD card later)
4 - Once the GPS is updated with the US map. Browse the Map update disk contents. This can be done with going to "My Computer" right click on your CD/DVD drive and click on "Explore"
5 - Open the folder called "img"
6 - Copy the file called "gmappromU.img" file is around 430mb. (This is the map file for Canada)
7 - Insert your SD card into your card reader and connect it to your computer. A window should pop up. If not you should see it on your "My Computer"
8 - Once you have navigated your way into the SD card directory. Create a folder on the SD card named "garmin" (no caps)
9 - Go into your newly created "garmin" folder right click and paste the "gmappromU.img" file. (This may take upto 20 to 30 mins)
10 - Once the process is complete, Rename the "gmappromU.img" file to --> "gmapsupp.img" (watch for spelling, no caps at all)
11 - Remove the SD card, Turn off your GPS, Insert SD card into GPS.
12 - Turn on GPS, let it load, and there you have it, the FULL North America Map.
When you are searching a state or province (depending where you are located) it will give you an option which map to use, Canada/Alaska or the lower 48 US states. Select your map and you are set to Go.
