Question about Canon EF-S 17-85MM F/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

1 Answer

Sharpness problem I have canon 20d and canon 40d. Have problem with sharpness on EF-S 17-85mm. The sharpness is very good on 80-85mm, but when the focal distance is 17.....80mm the sharpness is very, very bad! That's the same on a 20d and 40d!

Re: Sharpness problem

That should be a very sharp lens, only thing I can think of is that you have a bad copy. It can be sent into Canon where they will fix it.

First, I would try giving it a full cleaning, and taking shots in good light on a tripod at 17-80mm, just to make sure its really the lens

Not getting the usual sharpness on far away objects

make sure all electrical contacts on the back of the lens and on the interface of the camera are clean. if not clean with some spirit. Do not use sand paper. Does the camera work with other lenses ok ? also are the lens elements clean both front and back.

I am experiencing a problem with sharpness from my canon 100-400 L lens and 50D body. It was fine until recently. It seems very sharp on close ups but anything distant is not very sharp. I did recently...

About all you can do is to remove the lens, find the small gold contacts at the back, and clean them. That can solve some lens issues. Failing that, don't rule out sending the lens to Canon... they will assess the situation for free and the price to fix most things like this isn't unreasonable -- probably $200 or less.

My lens is locked and i cannot zoom

I had the same problem with the same lens. Over a few months it got lose, eventually getting so sloppy that it dropped if my 40D was held down. 10 days ago it jammed and the zoom was locked. I sent it to Canon and received it back in a week and it is now like new. Please don't try and fix it leave it to the experts at Canon. Not sure what the cost was as mine was still just under warranty
I think that this is a common problem with this lens and beleive that something in the lense works loose and eventually drops into the mechanism.

Is this a good lens?

That lens have a FD mount. That means that you need to an adapter to use on a New Digital Canon Camera. The problem with the FD-EF adapter is that the it has a lens inside to correct the focal point. It's usually a very BAD glass. The 60-300 F4 will become something like a 84-420 F8. You will loose all sharpness. My opinion is DONT use FD lens on a EOS Camera.

Canon EF-S 17-85MM F/4-5.6 IS USM prevents features from working on 40D

something sounds strange about this. aperture 00 is an invalid aperture value. stands to reason if that is the case the camera would complain about it. via error code. being that its only six mos. old i would give canon a ring.
