Harman Kardon AVR 320 Stereo Receive Problem

This receive keeps kicking off, like it's overheating. After it work a few minutes, a while--no consistent time pattern.

Also, we'd like to request to be sent another manual for this receiver--can that be done???

Check for a couple issues..... #1 - The STDBY battery or capacitor is functioning properly. #2 - The "Service Switch" located under the top cover is not dead shorting to ground. You should measure approximately 3.6 VDC off the battery and a similar level off the capacitor if it's so equipped. The Service Switch, should measure approximately 3.3VDC between the pins when in stand-by. 0.0VDC when depressed. This switch shorts the power to the DSP to ground causing a reset condition and also eliminating any stored settings within the unit. The switch can effectively be removed from the circuit by cutting the vertical jumper. This may help with your intermittent shutdown issue.

Will not retain presets

Many times a capacitor is used in place of an actual battery. On Harman Kardon receivers this component is on the front side circuit board behind the receivers external display. Harman Kardons website provides the actual location and part number if you dig around for the service manual PDF.

Can you hoop up an external equalizer to the Harman Kardon AVR 30?

Any traditional old-school analog stereo processor can be used only with analog stereo sources.

If this receiver had any digital sources, you would eventually discover that activation of a Tape Loop disables digital sources. Just the same you CAN still use DSP on processed 2-channel audio.

It's should clearly marked on the back of the EQ where everything goes.

The Line IN and Line Out would go to any available Tape Loop on the receiver. Something that has Out's and In's. Obviously, Out's on one device go to In's on the next.

Fiber Optic input

No gots. The 3485 is pre-digital stereo-only.

From the manual, page 19

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."

Do you get an indication on the display where the point of failure might be? It would show up on the LCD speaker diagrams just before shutting off.
