Question about Dell Latitude D505 Notebook

1 Answer

LCD flashes and flickers, partial display of bootup and then black screen

I have a Dell D505, here is what I'm experiencing:

Upon bootup, the LCD comes on but the bootup screen flickers, flashes, and is distorted. Then the LCD goes to block (although the backlight remains on) and there are intermittent scrambled images that appear on the LCD. The computer will boot up just fine, in fact when I hook up an external monitor the computer operates flawlessly.

I opened up the laptop and verified cables are secure, etc. My hunch is that I either have a bad lcd or a bad graphics chip on the motherboard, but I don't have a lot of experience with Dell Laptop repairs.

Can anyone suggest what the problem is and maybe even a possible solution? Thank you in advance.

Try the following:

Sometimes when you press and hold the corners of the LCD area (not on the LCD itself, but on the frame), and see if it gives you a picture (or at least flickers when you do so).

My opinion is that your LCD could need rewiring or replacing.

Display flickering

It could be a loose connection from the LCD screen to the motherboard. However, this can be risky to fix unless you are experienced with laptop repair.

It could also be faulty graphics card.

Graphics drivers may need updating.

The screen itself could be faulty and failing.

The system power supply may be faulty and not providing enough power.

Basically, it needs service - probably by a certified Dell technician.

I bought a new Dell Pc and I keep getting flashes in the upper left hand corner. How do I get rid of this? Thanks

When you say flashes, is it like portion of the screen flickers?

If the flickering/flashes starts in Dell screen just right after turning on the laptop, when you see the Windows logo or just right after you log in to windows?

Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor then toggle display. To toggle the display to external monitor you can try holding down keys such as the function keys.

If the problem persist from the external monitor it means the problem is the motherboard or the video/graphics card.

If no problem from the external monitor this means laptop LCD and LCD cable needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

My pc blank when bootup

If the laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes then you have a backlight problem.
You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out; usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

I have a Dell laptop D505. The laptop powers up but the screen display is very dim. I can't see the image on the monitor. I've tried to manually increase the color/brightness button and nothing changes. ...

Sounds like your inverter or your backlight is failing. The inverter is an easy repair, the backlight can be replaced but it involves taking the LCD panel apart, The backlight comes installed on new screens. I can include a service manual below and possibly a generic guide to backlight replacement....

If you?re positive that the black spots aren?t dirt or scratches on the outside of your screen you are probably dealing with dead screen pixels. Short of replacing the LCD screen there is no way to repair them.
