Hello
i have the same problem with err99 tried the "solution" winth cleaning the lens contacts, removing batery and card but notfing. tryed shooting pictures with no card, i got no error but when i inserted the card back in the same problem. any other ideas?
The lens contacts are oxidized or dirty. The contacts are used to communicate from the camera micorpocessor to the lens, etc.
Turn OFF camera.
Remove the lens
Using a pencil eraser, clean each contact on each lens and the camera body, taking care not to allow debris enter the camera.
Wipe contacts witha a soft cloth after "erasing".

The most common issue that brings about the Err99 is an issue between the lens and the body, but it could actually come from a variety of problems.
Two things you could do: 1) Clean the contact points on both the Camera and your lens (be careful not to get any dirt into your camera - best to hold it in the air facing down when you are cleaning it) 2) Remove your batteries and memory cards (most cameras also have a small battery for the Date/Time), turn the switch on for a minute or so, then turn it off and replace the batteries and memory cards
I know the original 300D and even the 350D had a very limited shutter lifespan, if you've had the camera for a long while and have taken many pictures it is possible that this may be related to your issue.
The err99 could come from a lens incompatibility, a battery problem, a shutter problem or just "dirty" contacts on the body/lens contacts. Try cleaning battery contacts with a pencil eraser and same with contacts on body but make sure eraser bits don't get in camera. Rich
Hello hemantp. This error code in this model indicates that the lens electrical contacts are dirty or slightly oxidized. To clean them you will need a common pencil with a clean eraser on the end and a lens cloth.
Detach the lens from the camera and hold it so that the lens' gold contacts are pointing down. Lightly "erase" their exposed surfaces and then clean them with the lens cloth to remove any debris.
Do the same with the gold contacts inside the camera body. Although this is a wee bit more challenging, you can do it by holding the camera so that the lens opening points down. That way no debris will fall inside as you clean. Joe
So you're saying the camera works fine with another lens, just not with the 18-55. Try cleaning the contacts where the lens and the camera body meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.
ERR99 means the camera is not communicating with the lens - probably just dirty contacts.
To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: - 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card. 3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes. 4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera. 5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: - 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Insert the CF card. 3. Turn on the camera. 4. Format the CF card in the camera. 5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: - 1. Turn off the camera. 2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body. 3. Reattach your lens. 4. Turn on the camera. 5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician. If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

My canon xti had the same reading cf card error 99.
Since my camera is out of warranty. I had to find a way to fix it. After reading all possible solutions in this site, I looked at the pins (that used to connect to the CF card) and found out that one pin in the middle bent. That caused the problem. I used the tiny screw driver to bend that pin back to the original position. Inserted the card back and it worked. I felt so happy!!!! (Please make sure to have the battery removed while fixing...to be saved.)
