At the bottom of the steering wheel you should see a screw that goes crossways through the steering wheel and shaft. It will have a nut on one side and a phillips head on the other. Do not try to unscrew this bolt! Use a punch and tap it out from the nut side being careful not to damage the end of it. It is serated and will not turn with a phillips screwdriver. Once this is removed the steering wheel should just pull off. If it doesn't, post your model/serial number and I will check to see why.

A year too late but I've got your answer. I had the same problem and no amount of soaking or banging would make it budge. I ended up having to remove it with a high speed cutter and a chisel. Replacement was about $55.

How do you get the gear at the end of the steering shaft off to replace it on a John Deere la175 lawn tractor?

It's a lock nut. But you should have no trouble removing it. Just hold the steering wheel, or turn it all the way to one side. But a socket on the nut below the gear and ratchet it off. That's all there is too it.

Remove steering links at one end then route and reroute belt accordingly. At wheel end, or spindle is easiest.
