You need a Windows DVD -- Same version as you have -- Vista / Win 7, 32-bit / 64-bit.

A local PC repair should be able to burn you a copy for a small fee.

Bypass "step 1" and follow the instructions for "step 2".

Acer laptop saying bootmgr compressed type in password at start but keeps going to bootmgr compressed cannot access any thing

To solve this, you need the install, update or recovery (Win7) disk for your version of the Windows OS. (I am assuming you do not have Unix on the machine.) Make sure to match the service pack and specific version (Home Basic, Premium or Business for Vista (32 or 64-bit), Home or Pro for XP) installed. The Windows 7 install or upgrade discs have the contents of all the options. If you have a laptop without an optical drive, you can run the files from a USB optical drive or thumb drive.

Put this disc in your optical drive and restart your computer. Press F12 repeatedly as the computer starts. This will give the Boot Options menu. Select boot from CD or USB as needed. Let Windows load from the optical drive and then choose the Recovery option. You will need to use the Command Prompt option. Then type "bootrec /FixMBR" without the quotes and followed by enter. Then type "bootrec /Fixboot" (as above without the quotes and followed by enter). At the next prompt, type "bootrec /rebuildbcd". When you get the next prompt, type exit.

Now restart the computer. If one of the above steps failed, you may need to reinstall your OS. Another option to try is to Validate and Fix the File System. From the same recovery disc command prompt, type "chkdsk c: /r" to repair the boot process.

I hope this helps.

Boot mgr is missing

Boot Manager is missing If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information
More Info MS KB 919529 More Info MS KB 927391 Check points for fixing missing boot-manager: Check that your boot device is configured properly Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". Boot Manager is compressed If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart OR maybe try this first. Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager: Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If the above doesn't solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then press "Load Drivers" (Instead of "Next") and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect "Compress this Drive" and choose Apply to sub-folders and files. If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands: compact /U C:\bootmgr compact /U C:\ntldr If you for some strange reason have lost your Vista DVD, then you can also use a Windows 2000 / XP install CD and enter the recovery console instead and execute the following commands: attrib -c c:\bootmgr attrib -c c:\ntldr

Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

Windows vista black edition bootmgr compressed

Windows Black is a pirated version of Windows XP dressed up to look like Vista. Apart from being illegal software I have found that most versions of Black are highly unstable. If you want Vista then I recommend you buy a proper copy. If you're looking for free then I suggest you look at one of the many flavors of Linux. Most Linux distros(versions) have incredible graphical interfaces and are becoming almost more user friendly than Windows.
