The prism is a major repair. If the prism is damage the the camera is trash. If the focusing screen in fornt of the prism is scratched then you can replace it if you can find another one. Because the camera is so old you will not be able to get them from Canon. Because of the age you may be better off buying another used AE-1

What kind of battery does my Canon AE-1 take?

The AE-1 uses one 6V battery, either a silver-oxide Eveready 544 (or equivalent) or an alkaline-manganese Eveready 537 (or equivalent).

If you need a manual, you can download one from

Can my canon AE-1 operate without batteries?

The Canon AE-1 was a technically advanced camera when it first came out the "E" in AE stands for electronic. The whole camera depends entirely on a battery. The short answer to this question is No it will not function.

Broken prism need to repair

I suggest a good camera repairman, unless you want to embark a new career. Fortuantely Canon made so many AE-1s, that every repairman has some for parts and the prism seldom breaks ( I have 7). It could just be a broken viewing window / lens (about half inch by three quarter inch window you look into), but that still requires taking off the cover (with speacialized tools), to replace.

Shutter Speed

If your shutter speeds are off you can compensate by changing the film speed setting,
quicker ( than should be ) shutter speeds require you to set the film speed to slower ASA .. KC
