I was watching a DVD in my emerson vcr/dvd combo. All of a sudden, the screen froze up. Now I am unable to get the DVD out and/or start the DVD player.

clean the DVD player with a cleaning kit you buy from any eletronics store. If that does not work you need to service this as the optical laser is not functioning when it heats up at the solder joint this would cause artifacts and freezing as you prescribed. So diagnosis dirty optical laser or malfuctioning optical laser at solderjiont.
