Sounds like you have a defective peripheral. Disconnect everything except the hard drive, memory, and monitor and see if it boots. If it does then one of the disconnected items is at fault. If you have multiple memory sticks, just go with one at a time and see what happens.

Unless reinstall disk is defective it should work unless there is a hardware issue.

Adding more memory

would say memory at first. That depends on a few things. Increasing your hard drive size will only help if it has little space left. Defragging your drive and cleaning out caches and temp files will help with some drive issues. If you are already going into this with 1 GiB of memory or more, a memory increase might not help. Keep in mind, DDR memory works better in pairs, it can work alone, but a pair of 512 MiB DDR, is faster than 1GiB alone. Also, check what the maximum speed of memory your computer can handle, if your computer can handle 800mhz DDR2, putting in 533mhz DDR2 will hurt performance, even if you are raising the amount of memory. Check your system specs and match your memory to the computers specs for the best performance. Don't forget about your virtual memory settings, another computer bottleneck

Have a gateway mt3423 when i power on no display i have already bought new memory 1 gig ddr pny removed battery held power button put memory in top and bottom slots still nothing but power light steady on...

You could have memory problem, incompatible RAM or faulty RAM.
Are the RAM the same make and model?
Try inserting one RAM module one at a time to determine the faulty RAM.
When one RAM module works, then insert the 2nd RAM module to see if it works, Swap RAM around in the RAM slots.

Longer Boot time after upgrading the Hard drive

Hi,

first let's determine if the upgrade cause the boot speed.

Disconnect your NEW HDD and/or memory, one by one and see if you get back your fast boot. Then try with your NEW components only !

If you find it works better with new components only, then first connect your OLD HDD only and try.

If you connect both HDDs on one cable, check Jumper settings for both HDDs (Master/Slave).

Also HDD capacity and type is automatically detected by the BIOS and there is no need to put/change those settings manually.

I believe you new RAM is DDR type, too!
As written in the manual for the board, your motherboard has two pairs of memory slots, and you can use one or two modules of DDR memory, OR one or two modules of SDRAM memory, but you can NOT put BOTH DDR and SDRAM memory modules.

regards.

IBM xseries 205, Model 8480-43X Memory upgrade an POST BEEP

Those beeps mean that your RAM is not functioning. Are you sure you got the right upgrade type. Sometimes it'll fit into socket but won't work because of speed. Or just try reseating the modules.

Dell PE 1600SC invalid memory configuration detected

You may need to install memory in matching pairs. If the new memory is a single 1Gb module and you didn't already have a similar one they may not work together. Try removing the original module(s) and see if it makes a difference.

I want to know if I can upgrade the harddrive and memory

Depending on the memory you already have you can install upto a maximum of 1GB 266MHZ DDR, and cannot see any reason for not being able to upgrade your hardrive for a bigger one, but be aware that the Operating system backup will probably be on a seperate partition on your current hardrive, unless you got an installation cd with your laptop.
