Question about Canon Speedlite 580EX II TTL Flash

2 Answers

Recently my canon speedlight 580 EX II TTL has been acting up...especially in low light situations. About on in 30 shots actually has enough light in them...the rest of the time the shots are underexposed, and many times not even exposed at all. Ideas on what could be happening? I have never had this problem with this flash before. (It is about 2 years old).

I have a canon 5D camera, I am shooting in manual and I notice the flash acting up more in low light situations (such as a reception) than during daylight but do notice even in those shots some are brigher/not as bright.

I don't know much about the flash and what settings I have it in...I tend not to change them. I believe it is in TTL mode unless I changed something not knowing what I was doing. I also know that the flash is not working as "master" flash as I have tried to use it for this purpose with a second flash.

It sounds like you're experienced in photography - are you using in TTL or Manual mode? Do you have is set at a negative EV Value?

Are you shooting in auto or Manual mode? What type of Camera?

That the camera/flash set-up I use ... there are many variables - iso/metering setting/shutter settings/flash settings .
If it's a flash function problem, try this to isolate it - first, with the diffuser/reflectors tucked into the flash head, and the head straight up, with the flash set in master mode, turn it on and look on the back screen. push the mode button til you see the ETTL in the upper left of the screen .. then press the set button in the center of the dial and the nuber in the center of the display should flash (+0) while the light is flashing, rotate the dial to change the setting (i usually under power by 1/3 stop. Play with the exposures a few times to get the feel for what the EV shifts do to your exposure. generally speaking, for interior low-light, i prefer to bounce off the ceiling (if low ceilinged), if there's too much direct it will give you an uneven and predominantly underexposed image.
if you prees the mode button you will come to the same options for adjusting the output in manual mode, but it will not work with the autoexposure in the camera.
Try playing with the ETTL settings
I think the problem may be that you have somehow altered the power output setting on the 580.

Canon Speedlite 580 EX (mark 1) 6 years of continuous use - single flash, multiple flash & continuous burst - with rechargeable batteries. All is well, until recently. Now recharge time has quickly...

The capacitor (neck) is no longer hold a charge or charging circuit is going out on a extended breaks.

Save your money and buy ATG's Godox TT685c.
If you buys two, then you got ATG wireless radio ETTL II flashes.
It would cost over $1,000.00+ USD to buy two Canon 600EX II-RT just to do the same with two ATG's.

is your master flash set on a camera? The EX II has something that makes it have a 1 second delay when using sync mode, unless the master flash is set on the camera.
