If you are talking about the small tab under the cav. plate. Its job is to counteract the effect that the prop has on steering.Because the props. spin in one direction, they create a sideways pull on the motor due to the prop biting into the water and trying to pull all with it.2 motors on the 1 boat often have a different gearbox fitted, and one will spin in the opposite direction and this counteracts torque steer. To adjust yours, work out where you drive the boat most.Speed etc.Higher speeds have more effect. If it pulls right, adjust it left. One bit at a time.I think yours will have an allen key or hex screw above the tab.Loosen it,move the tab.Takes only minutes.I hope this helps

The motor is on a 1995 Basscat Pantera 2 and the motor has no steering trim tab. Guy said it came that way new. Would this be correct.

Best to reply as comment on your original post so that Guy or whoever will get the feedback.
I don't know what motor you are playing with, but the fin style zinc or aluminum anode that attaches to many engines (just below the anti-cavitation plate) can be set at an angle to function as a steering trim tab.

What trim tabs on the radio control left , right, up and down?

on your controller you will have little handles that move all around these are your controllers, next to them are little switches that slide up and down or left and right. these are your trim tabs, with a little adjustment to these switches the elevator and rudder, and some cases airelons can be brought to a neutral position which makes flying much easier.

Pretend your lower unit is a little boat and you want it to go to the left. Which way would you point the motor, --do that with the trim tab.

1989 galaxie boat. inboard/outboard 4.3l stiff steering

The first thing I would do is disconnect the steering at the transom. You want to find out if the problem is in the helm(steering wheel) or in the inboard/outboard pivots.

When you turn the wheel after the disconnect, it should not be hard. There is a set screw in the steering assembly either above or below the dash. There should be enough tension so the boat does not wander but not enough to be terrible to steer.

Next go to the outdrive. Without the steering connected, the outdrive should move with minimum resisitance in either direction. There are pivot points on top and bottom that should have marine grease at the start of each season.

You have a 21 year old boat. The driveshaft in the Inboard/Outboard should be greased every 2 to 3 seasons and the watertight bellows can be inspected at that time.

Now if the steering is even worse under power, you need to adjust the fin that drops down behind the prop. This part controls Torque steer so the outdrive is not trying to turn on you and wants to stay straight. If you do not have a problem leave it alone.

You can get an estimate for the driveshaft service and greasing U-joints and inspecting the bellows. They should grease the pivot points then too. I am told its about a 2 hour job. In my area its 60-70 an hour.

Does the steering pull to one side while coming up to speed.
Have you adjusted the trim tabs on the motor?
they help to counteract the prop torque.
the motor will naturally have a torque to one side
because of the prop rotation.

The window fell off it rollers

  1. Remove all door inside handles.
  2. Remove the door inside locking rod knob.
  3. On styles with door pull handles, remove the screws inserted through the handle into the door panel.
  4. On styles with remote control mirror assemblies, remove the remote mirror escutcheon and disengage the end of the mirror control cable from the escutcheon.
  5. On styles equipped with switch cover plate in the door armrest, remove the screws securing the cover plate, then disconnect the switches and cigar lighter, if so equipped, from the harness connectors.
  6. Remove the remote control cover plates and remove the exposed screws securing the cover plate to the door inner panel.
  7. On styles with integral armrest, remove the screws inserted through the pull cup into the armrest hanger support. On some styles it may be necessary to remove the screws behind the armrest deflector or courtesy lamp remote control cover plate. On styles with armrest applied after the door trim installation, remove the armrest to door inner panel attaching screws.
  8. On styles with with two piece trim panels, disengage the retainer clips at the front and rear of the upper trim panel. Remove the upper trim panel by lifting upward and sliding slightly rearward to disengage the the front door inner panel at the beltline.
  9. On styles with electric switches located in the door trim panel, disconnect the wire harness at the switch assembly.
  10. To remove the lower trim panel, remove the attaching screws along the upper edge of the lower trim panel. Then starting at a lower corner, insert a pry type tool between the door inner panel and the trim panel and disengage the retaining clips down both sides and across the bottom. On styles with courtesy lamps or reading lamps located in the trim panel, disconnect the wire harness at the lamp assembly.
  11. On styles with one piece trim panels, remove all the clips around the perimeter of the trim panel. Push the trim panel downward and outboard to disengage it from the door inner panel at the beltline. Disconnect any courtesy lamp wire harnesses, if so equipped and remove the trim panel from the door.
  12. Installation is the reverse of removal. On styles with adjustable trim supports at the beltline, the door trim panel can be adjusted in or out so as not to restrict door window operation.
