Had the same problem...tried everything with no results. In desperation, I grabbed a different USB cord, plugged it into the drive and the laptop and VIOLA! my laptop could see it again! Maybe this will help someone. Cheers!

My computer recognizes my wd external hardrive but says it cant fin the necessary software

Right-click My Computer and go to Manage Computer. Then, click Disk Management. You will see the different partitions of the disk labeled by alphabet characters. Click on the partition associated with your external drive and then just change the character to any alphabet character that's aren't used as labels.

I have XP and my WD hard drive will not recognize?

Try a different "data" cable between the computer and the WD unit.

Try connecting the unit to a different computer.
If it still does not work, then either:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, inside the casing, has failed,
* the disk-drive, inside the casing, has failed.

Disassemble the unit, and remove the disk-drive.
Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive to a computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK, i.e., the USB-interface is the problem.

Copy the serial-number of the disk-drive, and use it to "check warranty status" on WD's web-site. If the drive is still under warranty, WD will replace it.
If not under warranty, WD has a "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., buy another MyBook through their web-site, and get about a 20% discount, as a current WD customer.

Western Digital MYBOOK 500GB external harddrive won't come on. When it plugs in, the blue light comes on for about a second. Computer does not recognize drive.

It is "dead". If it is still under warranty (check '' for details), then Western Digital will replace it. If not, check their web-site, for their "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., since you bought one W.D. disk-drive, you can get a discount on buying another W.D. disk-drive, if you order online from W.D.'s web-site.

was the data on this drive transferred from the same computer, or another and now you're trying to read it? If not, was the data transferred from a computer using the same operating system?

When you connected the drive, did the Operating system prompt you to install drivers? If it didn't, your port may not be enabled.... Unless Windows "sees" the new device, it cannot install the drivers necessary for the device to be reconized by Windows.

I've provided a link to the WD device page and Quick Start Guide.....

If the drive had already been installed and now cannot read, WD has several solutions on their FAQ for the product. A link to the FAQ relating to not being recognized is below:

Maybe it might be that the hard drive is dead , you can test if it works by connecting it to another computer or device (ps3) if it works (reads/writes) you might want to try this .You can burn a live cd (Operating system on cd) and this might detect your drive if its a usb driver problem (used to  detect USB devices).

External hard drive not recognized

I think the hard drive is causing the issue as the two computer were unable to detect the drive.

In this i want you to disconnect the hard drive & clean the golden edges of the drive and the connctors and connect it back.

Go to BIOS menu & check whether it is detected in the BIOS or not.

If it is not detected, connect the hard drive to another computer which can boot to windows.

And run the diagnostics using the software from the WD site.

Error code information you can get from

Check with this.

Good Luck.
