We purchased this wash 6 or 8 years ago. I retired recently and became aware that my wife is making additional trips down stairs on wash day. The machine agitate the close to one side than on spine it’s out of balance and sounds like a train wreck, it gets so bad that if she doesn’t run down stairs to catch it it will vibrate across the basement floor to the end of the hoses. She contacted a repair person a year ago who came over and freed up the self leveling devices but it mad no change. I worked 12 to 16 hours a day 7 days a week and rather than bother me my wife just dealt with the problem by running up and down the stairs. I’m not so inclined to do that. I’ve made sure the machine is level , No help, I’ve leaned and lubed the self levelers’ and they work fine No help, I even set the front legs in a 2X4 that I nailed to the floor and the machine broke lose and ran again. If on ever load we wait until the machine has completed agitating (the close not me) and than re-disrupted the clothing it will spin out okay but it still spins unevenly. This problem happens on large, small, heavy and light loads alike and in ever incident all of the items in the wash have been agitated all to one side of the drum before the spin cycle begins. Thank you for any help you may offer.

A couple of thoughts:
1. Take top off and check to make sure springs/absorbers are in place and not broken..
2. Try a load with no clothes and see if it happens.
Good luck.

SOURCE: Maytag Top Loader Thumps When In Spin Cycle

My guess is that one of the three counterweights have separated from their support. Probably rusted away.
36 years is quite a feat. Today's machines would be lucky to 1/3 of that life.
Sounds like its time to go shopping.

Could you please tell me how to remove the agitator for cleaning on a Maytag top loading performa machine heavy duty.super size 3 speeds quiet series 100 13 cycles Thank you Bob Clark

The agitator on a Maytag Performa comes off by removing the center post cap and dispenser by pulling on it. Locate the agitator bolt and loosen (you may need to hold the agitator in place while loosening). With the bolt removed, the agitator will lift off.

If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Hello tmsn2tree,

See this post for the details on a DIY repair for clutch issues with this machine, post back if you have questions. Most DIY folks can do this it's just a tight work area and you will save yourself $350+ in parts and labor. Your machine is a series 17 first two digits of your S/N mine is a series 16 and did not use the upper oneway roller clutch bearing. If you DIY the repair I would like to know if your series 17 machine has the upper roller clutch bearing. Rich

My maytag washer model PAV3300AWW will not spin

Check the belt at the bottom of the machine. You can also remove the back panel. Either the belt has become stretched or broken and needs to be replaced

Burned belt?

Yes, smell like your belt.. if there is water in tub, try to get it out... (wet vac)... slide your washer out and tilt it back so you can see under... there should be 2 belts.. 1 for gear and 1 for water drain pump... and you can check for parts.. good luck...

Maytag Performa - Loud Noises during Spin Cycle

This washer is JUNK!!!!!! We have the same washer (2 1/2 years old) and same problem. Tried to replace the bearing myself, no luck. So I called a repair man to come out and look at it. As soon as i told him the model number, they would'nt even come out. Very common problem for this washer. We are on our way to Sears to purchase a Kenmore.....GOOD LUCK

Check your lid switch, some machines stay running when you add clothes when it agitates, but will shut off if you lift the lid in rinse and spin, lid switch may be broken.
