I have a Maytag Performa HD “Quiet Series” 4 speed 16 cycle
top load washer, Model # pav3300aww Serial # 1275577yy. We purchased this wash
6 or 8 years ago. I retired recently and became aware that my wife is making additional
trips down stairs on wash day. The machine agitate the close to one side than
on spine it’s out of balance and sounds like a train wreck, it gets so bad that
if she doesn’t run down stairs to catch it it will vibrate across the basement
floor to the end of the hoses. She contacted a repair person a year ago who
came over and freed up the self leveling devices but it mad no change. I worked
12 to 16 hours a day 7 days a week and rather than bother me my wife just dealt
with the problem by running up and down the stairs. I’m not so inclined to do
that. I’ve made sure the machine is level , No help, I’ve leaned and lubed the
self levelers’ and they work fine No help, I even set the front legs in a 2X4
that I nailed to the floor and the machine broke lose and ran again. If on ever
load we wait until the machine has completed agitating (the close not me) and
than re-disrupted the clothing it will spin out okay but it still spins
unevenly. This problem happens on large, small, heavy and light loads alike and
in ever incident all of the items in the wash have been agitated all to one
side of the drum before the spin cycle begins. Thank you for any help you may
A couple of thoughts:
1. Take top off and check to make sure springs/absorbers are in place and not broken..
2. Try a load with no clothes and see if it happens.

My guess is that one of the three counterweights have separated from their support. Probably rusted away.
36 years is quite a feat. Today's machines would be lucky to 1/3 of that life.
Sounds like its time to go shopping.
