Question about Pool & Spa

1 Answer

Have a Hayward Mod.#36C68/H400. Unit comes on, gas is on then goes off after 5 sec. DE filter is showing 30 PSI. is this to much pressure? Is it the gas valve? How old is this heater? I am a pool tech. Need a on line copy of trouble shooting guide. Thank you, Dennis.

The pressure gauge on top of the filter only reads 5 psi. I backwashed and added DE and it still only reads 5 psi. It also read 5 psi after filter was backwashed and before DE was added. What prompted me...

Is there good water flow? Can you feel good flow at the pool return?
If so, using your hand, try to stop the flow. Does the pressure go up?
If the pressure goes up, something inside the filter is not presenting resistance to flow as is normal; it could be a broken element, etc.
If there is no flow or if the pressure doesn't go up, make sure that there is no obstruction in the line coming from the pool to the pump. Check the inlet basket, inlet strainer in the pump, look for debris in the pump inlet & pump outlet piping.

Your temp problem probably has nothing to do with this. Usually it will just be a temp. sensor. A simple and cheap fix.
As far as the pressure goes, the higher the pressure at the filter the lower it is at the heater. So don't go on the filter pressure alone. If it reads pressure problem always clean the filter first. Next you should check to be sure the impeller isn't clogged. Then be sure you don't have a by-pass valve that is open.

0. Check the spark ignitor conection to the board
1. Check the water by-pass valve if you have it
2. Check your gas pressure. (5-7"wc for natural gas, 9-13"wc for propane gas)
3. Clean your filter for your water system or remove it and try again
4. Check the Hi-limits on your heater
5. Replace the thermostat

Recommend backflush pressure of a hayward pool filter

After you have backwashed your filter until the site glass run clear. Go to rinse mode for 30 seconds. Make note of the filter pressure. Don't backwash until the pressure goes up 10 psi!! It is important not to backwash too much. As pressure climbs the sand filter actually filters better.

Hayward H400 Pool heater will not stay lit

"IF" - Hayward Pool Heater Fails to Ignite: the most common reason for this problem is insufficient gas supply. The Hayward heater LED display will show a diagnostic fault code of "IF" which stands for Ignition Failure. Undetected gas pressure problems if not investigated properly may result in unnecessary replacement and servicing of your Hayward Pool Heater.

Hauward H400 heater won't turn on

check pressure switch operation most heaters will not operate without sufficient water flow/pressure. You can use a multimeter to troubleshoot the wiring using the schematic. If its induced draft milivolt ignition verify there is suffiecient gas flow to the unit
