Not all RAID controllers are expandable. You need to check with your manufacturer. If so, plug in the drive, boot to the cotroller configuration and follow the manufacturer guidelines to expand the array. Otherwise, do a complete backup, add your drive and rebuild the array. Then restore your backup.

You can download it from a website and transfer from one drive to another. As long as all your cables are plugged in.. Set new drive as the slave drive to transfer

I have a server with a Serveraid 4H controller card, set up with two Arrays. Array B has 3 72GB drives set up as RAID 5. I would like to add 2 more drives to this array. Is this possible or do I have to...

I am not familiar with your RAID controller card but as long as the controller can see two additional drives, it shouldn't be difficult to add two new drives to your exisiting RAID 5 configuration.

You will probably need to reinitialize the RAID configuration for discs to copy all the parity information so you should refer to the documentation on re-initializing the RAID.

Can't see drives outside of raid

You may not be able to boot you drives outside of a RAID array depending on the RAID type (software/hardware) and configuration (RAID0/1/5). Generally a mirrored RAID1 should be bootable off of the RAID array. If you are using software RAID or a RAID0, you best bet is to update the RAID firmware, and if the data is accessible at all, transfer the data to another storage device.

How we know RAID 5 subsystem going to failed one

The manufacturer of the RAID interface-card has software that can be installed to monitor the RAID, and to identify any "failed" disks, and to "rebuild" the RAID array after a new disk-drive has been added to the array.

Can a raid5 be expanded to include an additional disk on the dac960prl or must the raid be destroyed and re-created?

Hi,

As a rule of thumb, a raid 5 array can be expanded to include additional drives. This is done during the boot process and then going into your RAID controller setup. You would then go into the RAID configuration and add the new drive to the array. This was the simplified explanation but i think you get the idea.

Things to consider,
DO NOT remove the RAID array unless you dont care about losing data.
DO NOT try to add a smaller drive than what is currently part of the array.
When possible, the new drive should be identical to the existing drives, but I have added same size, same speed more than once and it will work.
All of the drives you want as part of the array must be on the same controller.

Hope this helps,
Brian

Regarding Adding Higher Configuaration HDD Into Exisisting Raid 5

In raid 5 yes you can, yet you won't use the ful hard drive, the system will take only 73GB because that's the smallest HD in your array.

Just, of course, follow the indications for your specific RAID hardware/software about how to add a new HD to it:

Upgrade IBM Xseries 346 Server

You can add drives to the array through the scsi management software, then you can extend any dynamic partitions that don't have the OS on them. I don't think you can extend the array if it contains the OS. You may need to use the disk management utility in windows to make the partitions 'dynamic disks' before you can extend the data partitions

Raid failure

Not a lot of details, but here is some basic information, assuming you have a Dell with Integrated RAID

Dimension 9150/9200 and XPS systems have RAID, depending on the model the exact troubleshooting differs. At boot, after the Dell screen, you should get the RAID status listing. RAID 0 will either be normal or failed. Raid 1 can be normal, degraded for failed.

If the RAID array was RAID 0 and one of the drives failed, then all data is lost and you'll have to create a new array then reinstall Windows and drivers

If the RAID array was RAID 1, then you may need to add the new drive to the Array, CNTL+I or CNTL+N at boot (Depending on the system model) add the new drive to the array and reboot. If the system still will not boot to Windows, then you may have a software error too with the OS.

If during troubleshooting, the array was broken in the RAID BIOS, then the array will need to be recreated and Windows/Drivers reinstalled.

Run Compaq Array Configuration Utility

Hi Foambob,

Try all means to get a smartstart CD.
Normally new version will be able to use on older hardware , but no guarantees.
I have always found it easier to use smartstart CD auto mode.
You can also do the install and then run ntssd to update all the drivers etc., but I don't recommend it for novices. Use the auto mode , it takes longer but safely and surely.

Good luck

Drive array problem

Hi Nick ,

As of now you can Select "F2" to accept data loss and re-enable logical drive. This Load OS Normally .
It seems that one of the HDD in the RAID 5 has failed , Did you notice any LED indications like red or amber on the HDDs ?? if so get that hdd replaced . Make sure the Failed HDD is replaced .
You can run the Array Diagnostic Utility from HP System tools to check the Failed Drives and also frimware version of the controller . If the frimware is not latest Update it from HP website. DL380 G4 should have Smart Array 6i controller .

Hope This was Helpful
cheers :)

Raid w/ hard drive defunct

Well lets make some assumptions
1. You have a Raid 5 System
2. You only have 3 drives in the Raid ARRAY
3. Only 1 drive has failed

To fix the problem you should only need to Replace the Failed Drive
Then start the raid management software or bios
Rebuild the array

If you have more than 1 drive failed in a RAID 5, and still must recover the data it is possible. But very expensive. Still fixable however.
