I found this link useful, I wasn't strong enough to open by twisting, but I was able to pry open using a combo of sharp putty knife, starting at flat edge next to receiver and working down light button side, using screwdriver to hold open while I worked it with putty knife. You will make mars and will possibly crack a few clips. I found the rattle to be the small board that was soldered on only by a few clips. This is probably the board that allows the device to send a signal. I don't know how to reattach it, let me know if you find out how. Take the pile of parts to your friendly local TV shop and have them solder the board back on.
You may have to try several shops until you find the guy that is interested and knowledgeable.
And as always affordable.

Trying to setup a cobra 29ltd chrome. Put on channel 20, switch set on cal, keyed up the mic, and when I turn the swr cal knob the needle won't move. Magnetic ant with acc outlet for power Any ideas

First, make sure that the CAL/SWR/RF switch is set to CAL. If you still can't move the needle, check the RF output. If the needle moves to the far right, you at least have output power, and something is wrong with the SWR circuitry. Does the needle move with incoming signals?? If the needle doesn't move, then you either have a damaged meter. If the needle moves on rec eived signals but not when you transmit and the switch is set to RF, then you most likely have a damaged transmitter output stage.

Wireless devices do use radio frequencies. Have you taken it elsewhere ? This is just a bit of knowledge I found floating around in my head. It could be that the device won;t work work in that area.

No sound on unit

There are any number of reasons for no sound. I will assume you're using new batteries or fully charged batteries. The simplest reason is that a wire has become disconnected from the speaker. This would make the radio sound the same on as off. To test this see if the radio has a way of turning the squelch off, sometimes a simple push button, sometimes a menu setting, sometimes a dial to adjust the squelch setting. If there is no hissing, sometime very loud so turn your volume down first, then either the audio output amp is dead or a wire to the speaker is broken or disconnected. I today's radios the audio amp is most likely a simple small IC but, it could be inside an all-in-one chip and if it's proprietary getting the chip could be a problem. If it's a simple audio chip you'll have to find a replacement or rig up another audio amp IC to work as a replacement. Let's hope for the simple broken or disconnected wire which should be easy enough to fix.

Now, if when you remove the squelch you hear the hissing but you still cannot hear transmitting from your other radio, it could be that the one transmitting is in fact NOT transmitting an not that the other radio cannot hear. You have checked that both radios can or can not hear someone else's radio right?

Assuming you do know that one radio cannot hear what the other can and make no sound other than hissing when the squelch is off the problem is either in the RF or IF sections of the radio's receiver. In general this used to be a more complex repair so let's go another easy fix by going to the very first place the RF comes in, the antenna.

Just like the audio section when a speaker wire is disconnected sometimes the wire or trace going to the bottom of the antenna can become disconnected or broken. To check this bring a good transmitting radio very close to the one that hisses but does not hear the transmitting radio and see if any place as close as you can get the two radios causes the non-hearing radio to hear the transmitting radio. If so, then look for a problem with the antenna connection.

If none of these easy things bring the problem to heel then there's probably something amiss in the RF or IF receiver sections. If the radio has one or two chips that do all the work here then see if you can get both and replace them. I haven't even taken apart my own small FRS radios to see how complex the receivers are in these so I won't go any further than that since I simply don't know your radio.

I hope that helps.

Will transmit for a while and then quit

Check RF transistor may have leakage, "probably won't show up on a regular meter, carefully inspect board for bad solder connections, buy semiconductor cold spray may help tracking faulty part.

Motorola T5500 Scanning problem

Most likely it is stopping at a channel which has RF (radio frequency) activity. The activity doesn't have to be another radio with someone talking. It could simply be something transmitting on the same MHz. The only way to know for sure is to try the radios in a different location (as in moving away from the problem). If you want to avoid this "noise" you can turn on your interference eliminator, and it should block out anyone transmitting on the frequency (unless they set their interference eliminator to the same code as yours.)

If the noise continues when you try the radios in a different location (more than 5-10 miles away), then you will have to investigate a problem with the radios themselves.

Maybe there's something wrong with the rf and av cables that you have. Try and borrow some of them from your friend. Or, maybe your RF and AV cables' cords are either bent or wrecked. Try fixing them and try again. If it still doesn't work, then come back.
