Question about Texas Instruments TI-86 Calculator

I'm trying to learn how to get a cubed root on my calculator. I've looked up a lot of different ways of doing it.. but what does ^ mean?!

Hello,
If there is no special key reserved for that operation, you can use the raise to an arbitrary power key. This key is represented as [^] ( a caret or accent circonflexe) or [X to the y] or [Y to the x ]. I have just verified : it is primary key accessible directly.
If you want the cube of a number; 2 [^]3 =2x2x2=8.
In your algebra course they must have taught you that the roots of a number (square, cube, fourth, fifth, nth) are equivalents to raising that number to a fractionary power (a power whose exponent is a fraction of the form 1/2 ,1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/n etc.)

27[^] (1/3) = cube root of 23 = 3

There are several ways to find the cube root of a number on a calculator. On this calculator, we can use the nth root button, by using the yellow shift button with the ^ key. Another way to do this is just to use the ^ key.

The cube root is the shifted function of the 0 key.

I assume you want 40 raised to the one-third power?
Three simple ways.
Raise 40 to the one-third power: Press 4 0 y^x ( 1 / 3 ) =
or
Take the cube root of 40: Press 4 0 2nd cube-root = (the cube-root is the shifted function of the 0 key)
or
Take the third root of 40: Press 4 0 2nd xth-root 3 = (the xth-root is the shifted function of the y^x key, located just above the divide key)

Finding a cube root on calculator


You can calculate cube roots by using the cube root function (the 2nd-shift of the 0 key). You can calculate arbitrary roots by using the x-root function (the 2nd-shift of the y^x key, just above the divide key).

How to find cube root.


Hello,
What we call roots: square, cube ,fourth roots, etc. can be shown in algebra to be equiavlent to powers with fractionary exponents where numerator is 1 and denomonator an integer.
square root of a = a to the power 1/2
cube root of a = a to the power 1/3
n-th root of a = a raised to the power 1/n, n integer different from 0.

How to use calculator to calculate cube root?
If you do not have a specific (shortcut) key for it you use the key to raise to an arbitrary power [^ ], sometimes shown as [x^y]. The exponent will be 1/3. Do not replace 1/3 by its decimal approximate.

Cube root of 27 is entered as 27 [^ ] (1/3)

To find the cubed root (or any root) of a number, use the root() function.

If you want the cubed root of 125, you would type:

I am guessing, but, find the key that has a 3 to the left of the root symbol, looks like a check mark. Push it, then the number you want to take a cube root of, then enter.
