There is usually a thermistor in the coil inside that switches the fan on after defrost. It might be open circuit or the coil may not be getting cold enough. Check the condenser is clear and clean and try a thermometer in the evaporator (coil inside) to see how cold it's getting.

Freezer is working fine but the fridge is not getting cold

Hi mattwhodges,

This issue is usually cause bya defrost problem. First thing that you need to check is the freezer area. Please look at the back panel inside the freezer. If you notice a frostcovering at the back panel, you have a defrost problem. The only part inside the wholerefrigerator that "get cold" are the coils inside the Freezer. Thecoils need to stay free from excess frost build up so that air can pass throughthe coils and will reach the refrigerator section. The compressor and fans willshut off and machine will go into defrost mode every eight hours or dependingon the type of defrost timer or control you have. When the refrigerator is indefrost there is a heater that is tied into the evaporator coils inside thefreezer that comes on. This heater is behind the rear panel inside the freezerwhere the evaporator coils are located. It melts the frost that has accumulatedover the course of time. After about thirty minutes the machine comes out ofdefrost and goes back to normal operation. The first thing that you cando to get the machine running is to remove the rear panel of the freezer. Please remove all the frost ice that has built up. The best method is to pourhot water over the coils. The water will drain out the freezer through thedrain hole in the bottom of the freezer under the evaporator coils. Once all the frost is gone, you could put the machine back together and it would work fine. For a few days, until the frost has developed again due to the defrost issue. That would onlybe a temporary fix. Hope it helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

We have a Kenmore Fridge. The freezer will not freeze anymore but the fridge works fine. We did unplug the fridge and let it sit for 24 hours to see if that would help the freezer to work again. it...

IT'S FUNNY THAT THE FRIDGE SIDE IS WORKING AND THE FREEZER ISN'T,ALL THE MACHINE DOES IS GET COLD IN THE FREEZER AND THE EVAP FAN BLOWS COLD AIR FROM THE FREEZER TO THE FRIGE SECTION.IF THE FRIDGE IS COLD AND THE FREEZER IS RUNNING WARMER THAN IT SHOULD YOU COULD HAVE A SEALED SYSTEM PROBLEM,SOMETHING WGONG WITH THE COMPRESSOR OR A LEAK IN THE SYSTEM.THE GAS WILL CONTINUE TO LEAK AND THEN BOTH SIDES WILL GET WARMER AND WARMER.YOU CAN REMOVE THE INSIDE FREEZER WALL,LOOK AT THE EVAP COIL AND CHECK THE FROST PATTERN ON IT,WHEN IT'S RUNNING CORRECTLY THE WHOLE COIL WILL FROST UP BUT IN YOUR CASE YOU'LL MOST LIKELY FIND THE COIL PARSIALLY FROSTED OR JUST THE TOP OF THE COIL WILL HAVE ICE ON IT,THAT MEANS NEW FRIDGE TIME,IT WOULD BE TO MUCH MONEY TO REPAIR IT.LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE COIL AND WE CAN GO FROM THERE

I have a Whirlpool Princess series Model# ed20akxsn02 the Frige side is not cooling I have it on the highest setting getting 42 degrees and no cooler but the freezer is working fine?...

Check to see if the fan inside the freezer is working... Also check if you have any frost build-up inside the freezer ..Frost buildup is an indication of either a non working defroster and/or a bad fan. Can't diagnose it with limited information.

Blowing cold air but not cold enough to keep frige cold

if one of the panels in the fridge has frost on it, the evaporator coils may be iced up. this restricts the cold air flow. to defrost: empty the fridge and freezer, turn it off, remove the panel in the freezer that has the frost, use a hairdryer and defrost the ice buildup, sop up excess water, dry it up, replace the panel, turn it on (while it's empty), set the temp halfway, and close the doors. when the compressor turns off, fill the fridge. if the panels are frostless and the coils are warm, you may be out of refrigerant from a freon leak somewhere. it might be cheaper to replace the fridge.

The fridge on my fridge freezer has stopped

just about all friges work off the frezer .the evap fan moves the air fromthe frezer to the frig.so you would here fan noise.i dont know your brand but on most frezers if you turn the frezer temp to the highest setting thats acomplished by keeping the air from going to the frige.hence warmer frig temps .also make sure fan on out side back is working and condenser is clean.again turn air damper control from frezer to frige to lowest setting .somthimes this could be in frig section.God bless ,tom

YOU CAN BUY AN INEXPENSIVE THERMOMETER AT WALMART. YOU NEED TO KNOW IF THE FREEZER IS AT 0% . IF IT IS AT O% CHECK TO SEE IF THE FAN IN THE FREEZER WHICH IS CALLED THE EVAPORATOR FAN IS RUNNING. IF NOT THIS IS THE PROBLEM.
IF FREEZER IS NOT MAINTAINING O% AND FAN IS WORKING , CHECK THE LOWER PART OF THE BACK PANEL INSIDE THE FREEZER FOR FROST,IF IT HAS FROST ON THE BACK PANEL IT IS NOT DEFROSTING.IF SO YOU HAVE 3 POSSIBLE PROBLEMS.
CHECK DEFROST TIMER FIRST,MANUALY ADVANCE UNTIL IT CLICKS.IF THE HEATER IS WORKING FROST WILL DISAPEAR IN TEN MINUTES.IF IT DOES CLEAR FROST , FRIGE WILL COME BACK ON WITHIN 30 MINUTES.IF FROST DOES NOT CLEAR , TIMER MOTOR IS BAD,REPLACE.
IF ICE REMAINES YOU HAVE A HEATER OR LIMIT CONTROL PROBLEM.LIMIT CONTROL TURNS HEATER OFF WHEN COILS REACH 40%.LIMIT CONTROL IS A SMALL ROUND BI METAL SWITCH THAT IS CLAMPED TO COOLING COIL.THIS SWITCH HAS TWO WIRES GOING TO IT.
YOU CANNOT BYPASS THIS SWITCH . IT WILL CAUSE HEATER TO OVERHEAT AND MELT YOUR REFRIGERATOR PLASTIC AND RUIN FOOD.
AS YOU CAN SEE REFRIGERATORS ARE COMPLICATED.IF YOU ARE NOT MECHANICAL,ITS BEST TO USE A TECHNICIAN.

New Refrigerator Past Warantee Not staying cold

is the fan in the freezer running? if not then the air cant circulate and nothing will cool properly. if is running, is there frost build up on the inside back wall of the freezer? if so you have a defrost problem. if no frost on the back and the fan is running, remove the back panel inside the freezer and make sure all of the silver coils have light frost on them. if only part of them are frosted get out your manual and look at the warranty section. then seal system may have a 5 year warranty. if it does then call sear for warranty service. if the coils only have partial frost and its not under a 5 year warranty buy a new frig. because repair will cost more than its worth

Fridge not cold, freezer fine...

look at the back inside wall of the freezer. you might need to put your hand on it to feel it. if you see or feel frost the you have a defrost problem. if its not defrosting the frost builds up and blocks air flow from the freezer to the frige so the frige cant cool. it will either be the defrost element, defrost thermostat or the defrost timer causing the problem
