Display says toner exhausted despite adding new cartridge
Unable to print as display originally read "toner low" for black cartridge. Replaced with new cartridge and still unable to print. Printer display changed and says "toner exhausted" despite adding new cartridges, unable to print. Samsung says it is not a valid error message in their database and must have been tampered with. Printer was purchased directly from Staples. Not sure how to fix this, there seems to be no direction to turn and they gave us a runaround for 3 months and now it is out of warranty. One of the techs originally mentioned changing out the main board, it was then discounted by the Tier 2 support because of the uniqe error message.

Hi, Toner Low message appears on the printer display screen when the toner cartridge is exhausted and there is no more toner powder left in the cartridge. At this point, you need to replace the toner cartridge in order to print. It is recommended that you buy an original toner cartridge to replace it because original cartridge will give you better results
Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya! CreativeTECH
You can't rotate the toner cartridges manually without potentially damaging the printer. To get the cartridges to rotate, close the door and go through the following sequence:
- Press Menu Select to get to the main menu - Go to the Print Menu - Go to the Quality Menu - Select Replace Toner - Use the arrows to select Black - When the display says "Black" press Menu Select - Press it again, the display should read "Open door and replace black toner"
Now the black toner should be positioned to be replaced, and you should be good to go!
The toner cartridges have a small port on the side that the printer uses to check the toner level. Our 7440N tells us it will soon need a new toner cartridge and will then print another 400 copies. Search YouTube for Brother Toner Cartridge and it will show you how to modify the cartridge by covering up the portholes with tape. Since there is obviously some kind of sensor, you might need to get a can of air and clean out any extra toner. Lastly, the Brother cartridges have "reset gears" which are replaced when the cartridges are refilled. You might have a cartridge which the gears were not replaced on.
In this case, actually it is not the Black toner that got depleted.
Here the message being displayed indicate that one of the color Toner supply
need to be replaced as it got depleted and currently the printer is printing in
Black and white using the Black toner cartridge.
in this case, to troubleshoot these issues please try
performing the following and check for the results.
* 1. Check for the level of the toner cartridges:
a) Check from the HP Toolbox application. Here are the steps
to be performed from your PC:
* Access the Toolbox software.
* Select the Status tab.
* Select the Device status option.
Here you can check for the supplies status in terms of the %
remaining for each toner cartridges.
b) By checking the supplies status from the printer control
On the printer display when printer is in Ready mode the
supplies status can be checked from the supplies level indicator. Each toner
cartridge and the Imaging drum level will be indicated by a bar which varies
according to the level of the supplies present.
c) Print the supplies status page from the printer.
* On the printer control panel menu, press Menu .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button
to select Reports, and then press Enter .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button
to select Supplies Status, and then press Enter .
If any of the color toner cartridges and the Imaging drum
have a low supply level replace them with genuine HP print cartridges.
The part numbers of the consumables are as follows:
Usually there is more than one cartridge empty when you receive this kind of problem. Try opening the top cover and check if the display changes - it should change to specify one (or more) of the color cartridges as empty. That one(s) should be changed too.
Print a Supplies Status page to see the actual pages printed...
To print the Supplies Status page from the printer, on the printer control panel, select
Reports Menu, Supplies Status, and then Print Supplies Status page.
If the page count from the Supplies Status page indicates that the toner should not be in need of replacement then you have a bad cartridge. Actually, the cartridge is probably fine but the chip on the cartridge has got a problem. Return the cartridge to O.D. and get another one. Unfortunately, chips that don't work properly in not all that unusual so HP has a pretty easy return policy.
