What is the "thump" I hear when the drum turns?

If it only happens when it turns on and it's a samsung dryer, there are a few problems you may have, depending if it's on a pedestal making noise or not, it could not be level causing an uneven position of the unit to make odd noises, or if it does it with or without clothes on it, it could be the idler pully misaligned or the motor not secure enough. If it happens only for a very very short period of time after you start the load, it isn't anything serious to worry about, however, you may end up having to replace the belt down the line. If it runs quiet, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. If its making a really really loud noise during the cycle continuously, you're having a bearing problem, but I think you're just experiencing a very small wear and tear noise and a lot of dryers can do this. Pinpointing it may just not be worth your time.

Why is dryer making a noise loud and sounds like motor?

U may have a bad bearing going out or the drum roller wheels or pulleys are bad. a bad belt? hopefully its not the motor or windings and brushes going out? Then agin may need to have the tranny looked if its seizing ? sorry lots of different opinions here but it could ba any of the above. is it tunrning ok or is it unbalanced and can u hear the noise from within the dryer if so it may just well be the drum rollers and thats not a difficult or costly job?

Hi,

There can be many reasons why your dryer will not start or turn...

The most common causes are the belt breaking or jumping off, or the motor goingbad...

Here are a couple of tips that I wrote will help you to figure out why yourdryer will not run...

When I push the start button, the drum will not always turn. Sometimes it make a buzzing noise and it smells like th emotor is heating up. after a few trys it won't even try to start. I took the dryer...

Sounds like the centrifugal start switch in the motor is malfunctioning -- the motor is running on the start winding and not switching (via the centrifugal start switch) to the run winding. The smell is because the start winding is overheating.

The centrifugal start switch is inside the motor on the end of the shaft with the pulley. You should be able to see it. Give it a good cleaning and lightly lubricate it. Move it back and forth to get it moving freely while cleaning / lubricating.

If this doesn't clear up the problem, the motor winding could be shorted already or the centrifugal start switch could be damaged beyond help by cleaning / lubricating.

More info, let me know.

Drum won't turn-belt is good-motor

If you can manually turn the drum, the motor's start windings may be bad.

If you can't get the drum to move, check to see if a sock or other small item is stuck between the drum and the inside of the front of the dryer. If you see nothing, it's possible that one or more of the four drum rollers is/are seized.

My dryer makes a buzzing noise and will not turn on. I have to reach in and turn the drum, retry-go through this process several times before it "catches"and turns on iam wondering if it is the belt

Most likely it is the start winding on the motor. The buzz you are hearing is the thermal overload. You would have to replace the motor. Check pricing against a new machin. Sometimes the parts are less cost effective than a new dryer.
