I had checked the items you noted, the key piece of info seems to be the Self Cleaning functions.

Do you have an electrical schematic for this range?

Would both ignitors (broiler & oven) mafunction?

Does the functioning of the self cleaning (which works) depend on these two ignitors.

I will look closely at the ignitors.

    OK

Let me do some further trouble shooting based on your recent inputs.

Sounds like the gas valve for the oven has gotton shut off. If you look on the back of the stove on the bottom (i believe bottom right) you will see a small square box with tubes goin in/ou (may have a cover shield to remov e to see it) check to make sure the switch/valve is not flipped to off, if it is flip the other way and try to light the oven again... If its already on and no damage to the stove has occured to cause the problem then the gas valve needs replacing..

Ok I see that you stated that the oven and broiler burners do not light but the self cleaning functions. Do the burners or burner light when the self cleaning cycle is turned on? Do the oven/broiler igniters glow or spark(depending on the oven/broiler ignition type)? If both broiler and oven igniters are not coming on then it could be a couple of things. Both igniters could be bad, both igniters may not be getting power signal from control board or possible bad rectification sensor if igniter is spark type. If the igniters come on then there could be a run-away valve closed(no gas to oven/broiler burner) or one/both gas control valves may not be opening due to weak igniters, sticking gas valves or flame rectification sensor(spark ignition). Let me know more information so I can assist you further.

The odds are not very good that both igniters would fail at the same time...but not impossible. Now the oven burner might be the only one that come on during the cleaning cycle. And when you start the cycle you may not be able to cance l it until it is complete due to the oven locks and you cannot shut it off.

  • muebe Sep 29, 2009

And yes the cleaning cycle requires at least one burner to come on...Oven should get really hot when the cleaning cycle is running.

Do you see the 'igniters' glowing when trying to start. If you look down in the bottom of the oven when you turn it on, you should see an orange glow coming from the ignitier turning on?

I did some research on GE's web site, I included the link below and the content of their troubleshooting page to help you solve your particular problem. They also have two videos for you to watch to help you resolve your problem of the top burners working but the oven oes not. I hope this helps.

Range - Oven Does Not Heat, But The Burners Heat

To minimize the possibility of electric shock, unplug this appliance from the power supply before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.

  • Make sure that oven controls are set correctly for either bake or broil.

  • Check oven door on self-clean ranges to make sure it is in the unlocked position.

  • Check the oven knobs to make sure they are in the correct position. If the range has knobs for oven temperature and oven function and if the control knobs were removed for cleaning, make sure they were reinstalled in the proper location.

Electric Ranges only:

  • Check the bake element. Turn your range OFF and remove fuses or turn breaker OFF, then unplug the range. Carefully inspect the bake element (lower element) for cracks or breaks. If cracked or broken, it will need to be replaced. To purchase a GE part or accessory on-line .

Even if the bake element is not broken or cracked, since it does not heat service is needed. If you would like to schedule a service appointment, please contact GE Consumer Service at 1-800-432-2737 or schedule a service appointment on-line.

Gas Ovens Only (excludes Dual Fuel Ranges):

  • On new gas range installations, make sure range main gas regulator "on" the range is set in the on position. They are all shipped with the regulator in the "on" position but if jarred or bumped during installation it can spring back to the off position. This on/off lever on the regulator may not be apparant to most consumers. There is a picture of it in the use & care for all xl44's in the lp conversion section. Otherwise, service may have to reset. (Burners will still work with the valve off, oven will not!)

To view a short video on the oven not working with a sealed burner:
    Play Video

To view a short video on the oven not working with a standard burner:
    Play Video

  • Check the oven Glo-Bar Igniter. Turn oven to On position, open oven door, and look for a red glow. If no red glow is observed, there may be a malfunction with the Glo-Bar, on/off control, or other electrical components.

Here is a link to the GE Knowledge base page that came up when I searched for your particular oven model:

Kenmore electric range model 790 oven stopped functioning, both broiler and bake. however, oven light still comes on.

I believe there is a thermal fuse (also called a TCO or Thermal Cut-Out) located either on the back of the oven, or between the top of the oven and the cooktop that has opened up. Did this happen after running a self-clean cycle?

The oven pilot does not light. The broiler will not work. The only thing that does is the light. GE XL44 range. The burners light and the pilots stay lit.

If you have standing pilots, make sure the pilot for the oven/broiler is lit as well.  When you turn the thermostat up to call for heat, you should see the pilot get larger. That larger pilot flame heats a hydraulic sensor and opens the main burner valve.

    Sf195lehz5 free standing gas oven,

Check both gas valve solonoids for 216 ohms [blue broiler wire to the orange common and red oven wire to orange common] both must be ok.

Check oven temp sensor for 1080 ohms.

If above are ok then the problem is either the spark module or the control board.

Since the gas valve was not opening and there was not ignitor sound I replaced the spark module for about $90. You have a 50-50 chance of being right.

My range is relitively new and I'm haveing an oven light problem which I traced to the control board so I may replaced this board to for about $200.
