The "return spring" is broken or unhooked. If it is unhooked, you can open the unit up and reattach it. If the plastic holder for the spring is broken then you could try to fix it (I won't mention a 15watt soldering iron).
Otherwise, replace the mixer; temporarily, use a large rubberband to hold the lever in locked position.

When itry to make bread dough in the mixer, the bowl locking mechanism doesnt work properly and the bowl moves and top of mixer jumps around how can i fix this

You need to make sure that the hinge pin is tight, turn machine completely upside down and tighten the slotted screw up inside the pedestal. If that doesn't fix it you will need to check that the locking lever is properly engaging in the slot. You may need to "SLIGHTLY" file the slot in the pedestal that the lever engages into. If you go mad with the file you could wreck the slot.

Head moves when mixing

Have you tipped it upside down and checked the grub screw up inside the pedestal. It is for locking the hinge pin tightly into the tongue on the lower motor housing. If that doesn\'t solve it you really should get a Kitchen Aid service agent to look at it. They should be able to get it locking again without wrecking anything. Don\'t leave it wobbling about or it will get to the point that parts will have to be replaced. If you must mix a batch up hold the head down and lock that lever forwards as best you can while it\'s running. Too much forwards pressure on that lever can bend the rod inside so easy does it.

My kitchen aid mixer bowl falls out when I'm mixing

Hello Heather,

Either the grooves on the bowl lock plate are worn out, or the grooves on the actual bowl are worn out. I would start with replacing the bowl lock plate. Here is a link to the part: KitchenAid Mixer Bowl Lock Plate 4163032

This part is really easy to replace, it is held into place with three screws, remove those screws (make sure to hang onto those you will need them to re-install the new part). then you should be able to pop the old plate out. To install the new plate like up the screw holes, and press into place, sometimes you need to lightly tap it into place with a rubber mallet as it is suppose to be a very tight fit.

Once that has been replaced your bowl should lock into place tightly. However there is always a chance that the bowl has been worn down and may need to be replaced. Here is a link to the 4.5 Quart bowl: KitchenAid 4 5 Quart Stainless Steel Bowl

Head won't lift without force. The head lock is in the Unlock position but it doesn't lift up easily. I have to stand behind the unit and use a lot of force to pull it up. It was fine one minute...

Presuming all looks OK near pivot & lock mechinism? can you see the locking hook in rear of mixer head at the hinge area directly behind lock lever, and is it nested in the slot on the base, or is it jamming up outside the stand and scratching it up?
There is a flat-head height adjust screw to control clearance between spatula and bottom of bowl visible from head-back position- leave it alone. There is a headless set screw visible when mixer is upside down to hold the pivot pin secure. This must be loostened with long-shaft flat screwdriver to remove the pivot pin for head removal if necessary ---avoid removing the pin if possible.

Is the hinge stuck with film of sticky sugar, milk-glue residue, ot the like? That is most common cause, distant second is the lock mechinism alignment (very rare)

Its important to keep head from wobbling side-to-side in use, so dont file or sand anything
Can telephone 609 213 2222 if necessary no charge for my talk.

Motor head locking lever is hard to unlock on Kitchenaid mixer after kneading dough.

Hello Flyfishing19,

The problem that you are experiencing is due to the torque that is put on the head while mixing dough. The lock is still working fine, although it is getting wear. You can replace the locking mechanism. However, it will work for a while longer. If you want to change the mechanism post back to this thread and I will be happy to locate you one and explain how to change it.

The flat mixing paddle is stuck in the mixer and can't be removed from the socket. It turns but when I pull it would not come out.

Here's what really happens. The hook has a shaft screwed into it with bayonet fittings that lock into the mixer. The shaft has a locknut where it screws into the hook. If the locknut becomes loose then the shaft can screw in too far making removing from the mixer almost impossible. Try to get a slim wrench onto the locknut and loosen it off enough to allow the hook to be unscrewed. After the hook comes off, move the locknut down the shaft until the whole assembly can be removed from the mixer. Re-attach the shaft to the hook making sure that the exposed portion of the shaft is long enough to allow for easy removal from the mixer. Tighten the locknut and you will never have the problem again.

Dough mixing paddle will not stay in my wife's Viking mixer

pour a little wesson oil into the attachment holes and work the release while inserting and removing the attachment. Make sure the unit is unpluged. The oil will lubricate the lock mechanism.

The head to my kitchen aid mixer bounces up when kneading dough

This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.
