Question about HP Officejet Pro L7590 All-in-One InkJet Printer

Keep getting the message "the following printhead(s) have a problem: black/yellow [K/Y]." the cartridges are new and have no apparent problem. This occurred right after a paper jam. What do I do? We have already tried powering down everything and turning on again.

My office jet L7590 printer suddenly quit on me. It keeps playing a message that says the printhead has a problem


Did you let one of your inks run dry? If so, you need to replace the effected printhead. This model has two, one for black and yellow, and a second for cyan and magenta. If you let the yellow run dry but have tons of black, it still effects the black/yellow printhead. Same with the other, either color going dry makes its printhead go bad. Either printhead will set you back about $75. Easy to remove and replace once you get the new printhead.

Bottom line with this model of printer...DON'T let you inks run dry. A new ink cartridge is $20 vs. $75 for a new printhead.

FYI - This is the most common mistake/problem with this printer. The Inkheads are built to last at least 40,000 prints. That's several years for most of us, that is unless you let the inks run dry.

I have an hp officejet 7110 all-in-one and I've been getting a message saying that supply expired on the black cartridge. i replace it and it still won't let me print. what else could be wrong

This document provides information on how to replace a printhead or ink cartridge.A printhead may need replacing when print quality issues cannot be resolved by cleaning the printheads or a front-panel display message indicates a printhead needs to be replaced.An ink cartridge needs replacing when a front-panel display message indicates either:
  • Low ink levels
  • Ink cartridge approaching expiration date
CAUTION: Never remove an ink cartridge and a printhead at the same time. The printer keeps saying there is a problem with the printerhead with the black/yellow. what can i do to fix this problem. The black yellow cartridge still have some ink in it. do i need to just change the...


Unfortunately, it sounds like you need a new printhead C9381A. You can hope that it's clogged from lack of use and go into printer properties and attempt to clean it (it will use a lot of ink in the process). However, the the black/yellow printhead generally wears out faster than the C9382A cyan/magenta printhead. Replacement should cost around $70 for each.

The printhead has a problem (after replacing the yellow/black ink cartridge with HP ink).


Try to clean the printhead manually ,

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

Re-insert the print cartridges. It is also possible that the heads are burnt. Get a new set of print heads (black/yellow) and install to the printer. If problem persists, clean the contacts on the printers. Use acetone + cotton swabs.

Changing the printhead


FYI: The L7590 doesn't have any tape on either the cartridge or the printhead.

Right couple of things here...

1. The printheads in the L7590 are either K/Y (black/yellow) or C/M (cyan/magenta)... There's no single black printhead unless of course this is not an L7590 we're discussing here.

2. The cartridges ARE individual with K, Y M C (Black, Yellow, Magenta and Cyan).


It's likely that the printer has one of the following faults.
  • Chip contacts and/or chips on the cartridges are soiled and/or damaged. Try checking for ink on chips and contacts in the cartridge bay

  • The little white oval pump in the bottom of the cartridge bay has become disconnect or broken. This is used by the printer to pump ink into the printhead but it also detects pressure variations and has a logic circuit which declares low pressure as "no ink".

If the problem is the latter then you need to get the printer serviced and/or repaired at a service center.

If it's the former you should be able to fix it yourself.

If you're using non OEM (ie: not by HP) cartridges I'd recommend getting a new OEM/HP one to test before you go for a service as some cartridges are just poorly filled and/or designed.

Simple solution is:

Replace the Black and Yellow Print Catridges. The print heads are mounted to the bottom of the catridges and these, depending on whther they're from HP or not. can have a hard time conducting electricity properly, and in turn.. spitting ink out properly.


Also happens often with aftermarket Catridges because HP puts chips on the catridge. be sure to put an HP catridge. Sometimes you get what you pay for :)
