On the HP website for driver downloads we used the last set of drivers listed (script) that solved the problem of no color and 11x17 sheet.

Yes the 2600 will print on heavy card stock and vellum paper. I had one and did some landscape proposals on this printer and also printed on card stock as well.

Nevermind the paper. What type of cartridges are you using? OEM, or compatible? Sounds like a cartridge problem to me. I'd try replacing the black

Check the Density settings first and might as well check Brightness and Contrast.

Okay, I found what appears to be the solution, you are not going to like it. Looks like it will take a good hour and possible not work if you scratch things. You have to go deep into the printer and clean mirrors. I think I will buy a new printer and it wont be an HP after this. Here is the discussion on the HP forum .
