Question about Yamaha YSP-800 System

Playing stage piano using YSP-800

I have a Yamaha CP33 stage piano. It is a good instrument, but does not come with speakers, so I invested in a used YSP-800 sound bar. The piano and the speaker system share a sleek and sober style and keeps the installation and wire mess to a minimum. As expected, 30W (82W peak) is plenty for me and the response over the whole spectrum is good even if slightly limited in the lower range. My deception is that this speaker unit delays its output. I would say something in the range of 100-200ms. This really spoils the playing experience, especially with sounds with a sharp attack (like piano). I could not find in the user manual any indication to eliminate or at least reduce the annoying delay. Is there anything I can do? I don't even mind open the unit and doing some soldering as I cannot return it.

You are right about the setup options, but the delay cannot be fully eliminated. Even when you set it at 0ms, there is still a delay of about 150ms. I contacted Yamaha tech support and there is no work around. The delay is supposedly present on all the current YSP product line. YSP digital signal processing induce a delay that can only be increased using the setup options to match the delay of some "slow" TV sets. In an ordinary home theatre configuration the delay is imperceptible, but if you play games or music, it is another matter. So I've sold my YSP-800 and I bought an M-Audio LX4 2.1 system, which I should receive next Monday. The sound should be much better (an without a delay), but I will miss the YSP form factor.

Tell me some tips and tricks about using the Kurzweil sp3x stage piano

The place to get the best help for Kurzweil gear is Sweetwater Sound.
Other than that, always use it in stereo mode with a decent sound system. Always use speakers with at least a 15" woofer and a horn to get the full range of sound it's capable of.

Yamaha CP33 Studio Piano won' turn on. Was thinking maybe the power chord overheated but really have no idea

Make sure you have the CORRECT adapter for the unit. It should say Yamaha on it and match the voltage and polarity. Thest the output with a meter. Common problems that happen to the piano itself causing the symptoms is a broken power connector or broken solder at the connector. Use a meter and verify the adapter is producing output. Expect the output to be a bot higher than listed when not plugged into the piano as there is no load on the adapter.

I want conect speakers

DO NOT connect speakers to the internal speaker drivers as you may not match the amps You should use an external amplifier to drive speakers OR use "powered speakers" If you try tying into the internal amplifiers you are risking damage to the piano.

I have around $100 to spend on a used digital piano keyboard, and i know nothing about playing, but i would like to learn, like teach myself, i did at one point try to teach myself on a late 80"s Korg...

You will likely have to double that budget to get anything decent... but look for a Yamaha in the PSR series (61 keys minimum). To get a full 88 key, you might have to be up in the $400 range for anything really decent.

Recording on my Yamaha CP33 keyboard using USB

We're talking about audio recording. If so you must conntect your piano by using the L + R outputs with your sound card or mixer line inputs (that's how I do this). USB is ok if you want to use your piano as a master keyboard (MIDI). Another important thing is that you must have an additional application installed called sequencer ( for example Cubase Sx, Sonar...) which will let you store your digital music. I'm not talking about the proper settings of them because it could take a day or so...:)
Overall, you will have to learn a bit about the home studio, home recording techniques. There are tons of informations on web. A great thing is that you can use your CP33 as a master keyboard to control additional virtual instruments (VST) or for example play different piano samples (check Synthogy Ivory). Possibilites are endless!

Radek
