Question about Pentax Zoom Wide Angle SMCP-FA 28-105mm f/4-5.6 Autofocus Lens

1 Answer

The Power Zoom appears to be locked at 80mm.

I cannot see a way to unlock the lens on my SMCP-FA 1:4-5.6 28-105mm Power lens. I now use a Pentax K100 DSuper which cannot operate a Power Zoom, however I am happy to use the zoom manually. I was using the lens successfully MANUALLY with a Pentax istDS but that camera body has gone faulty! So I hoped to continue to use the lens with my new camera but for some reason it is now locked on 1 focal length. HELP.

Re: The Power Zoom appears to be locked at 80mm.

(I just cut-n-pasted the comment into the solution so this shows up as a solved problem in searches.)

"I've found the solution!
Just goes to show that sometimes it's worth simply calling the importer's service department, who told me in 30 seconds!!
Hold the zoom twist-ring and push, or click it up or down, depending on which way you are holding the lens.
So simple; I even accused him of not knowing what he was talking about.. and of course apologised profusely when it suddenly happened."

What does smcp -fa mean

SMCP- means: Super MultiCoated Pentax (a term that refers to the anti-relctive coatings that Pentax has been using on its lenses for years F-means it is a lens designed to cover the larger area required of a lens for Film camera use versus the smaller sensor of the Digital SLRs Pentax also makes. Pentax also makes DA lenses , which will only work with their digital SLRs. A- means it will work in fully automatic mode on cameras that have the ability to set shutter speed and F-stop automatically (most modern Pentaxes) It should also be noted that all DA and FA pentax lenses have a modified version of the original Pentax K lens mount, which replaced their first lens mount, the universal M42 used by so many early film SLR manufacurers- this concluded todays pentax lens history

If your lens fails to extend or retract, try cleaning it with a lint-free cloth and some lens solution. If it still won't move, try resetting it. Many cameras have reset buttons that restore the camera to the default factory settings.

I have an old Pantax 35mm SLR camera (zx5). Would the lenses still fit the new bodies or do I need to purchase an entire new kit?

Nope! Your old Pentax (and Taukimar!) lenses will still work. Any type of "K-Mount" lens will work on a Pentax digital.

I have a pentex k1000 camera with a tamron ae 28-80 and ae70-210mm lens. They have pentex mounts on them. Are these lenses adaptable to todays autofocus cameras like the canon eos or pentex k100

If it is a pentax lens then yes but only for pentax wont fit a canon at least not to my knolege. pentax makes all there cameas with the same lens mount.

You are probably right - it sounds like it is not connecting right - I would take it and the camera to the store and check out another lens!
