Agree with holloway. I've had to clean mine several times over the years. You'll have to take the motor apart, clean the shaft and housing of dust and gunk, then oil or WD-40 it and reassemble. Be careful to note in advance exactly how all the parts go back together.

Sadly Hunter doesn't want people dismantling their stuff and replacing broken or burnt out pieces. They'd rather you buy a new one. If the motor has burned out which is possible a solution depending on how handy you are is simply hunt down a similar replacement and reconnect it.
Make sure the new motor has the exact same leads and connectors as the old one had as some Hunter fans have more than two leads. The model I have has four leads: a black, a white, a green and a red as my model has integrated lighting controls by passed by the motor.
I bought a simple blower motor with the same rating only two wires and with a bit of solder and wire I hooked up the motor and lights separately. The new motor is much faster than the older one so I had to add a tiny 1-way 500 watt dimmer switch to manually turn down the speed.
if its sat for any length of time the lube on the shaft can harden. remove the grill and spin the blade to see if it rotates freely. using care to stay away from the blades set it to the highest setting and give the blades a little assist to see if it will begin to spin, if it does,, use some WD-40 or Trilube on the shaft of the motor front and backside

(note) larger fans require more juice to get them going,, so yes , if the cap is flawed and not totally burned out,, ( they are called starting capacitors) then they are not supplying enough amps to get the job done,, which in turn would allow the motor to Hum, but repeated trying will burn out the cap
If you plug it in and turn it on, does it "humm".
If so, it is getting power. It could be the blades are stuck on something: do they turn by hand?
The motor could be dirty also, is the blade hard to turn?
It can be repaired by Vornado, or you can dis-assemble the motor and clean it.
Before getting into electrical issues, I would see that both ends of the motor shaft that drives the fan are clean and not impacting the movement of the motor. Clean as best you can and hit with some WD40.
I would also check to see if the manifold/flywheel that holds the blades to the motor shaft has started to crumble. This may cause the issue you are having and is a bigger PIA to deal with.
Isolate power from the fan and see if you can spin the fan blade by hand. It should move easily. If it does not then it is recomended that you replace the fan. The time it would take to replace the bearings in the motor would not be worth your efforts.
Most fans do not have a start capacitor for the reason being they are not under severe load.
Wd-40 is not a very good lubricant. It only lasts fror a few days and then dries up again. In order to get your fan working again, take some 3-in one oil and put a drop at the bearing side of each bearing top and bottom with the shaft upright. Spuin and tap the motor briskly with a small tack hammer or screw driver handle. This will impact and allow the oil to get into the bearings Keep tapping and turning until you feel it lighten up a spin freely. Turn it over and do the same thing again. I garuntee that all will be fine after this.
There is usually a pin in the shaft of the motor, that corrosponds with a slot in the fan blades, it sounds to me like either (a) the pin somehow came out, or (b) the slot in the blades is rounded. Hope this helps
Hello janeknows. The shaft of the fan motor may have a bearing gone bad. Follow these steps to locate problem. #1-turn power off by tripping the breaker, place your fingers on the shaft surrorting the blades & SLOWLY rotate the blades feeling for a catch or bump. A bump felt I suggest replacing the motor. No bump #2- remove the screws holding the cover supporting the control switches. Located among the wiring is a box with 2 or three wires. This is a capacitor. Note the info on the capacitor (1.4mf125v). Contact the fans Mgfr they may send you one for free if not visit your local hardware store and ask. Replace the unit using the wire caps in the unit or snip & strip the wire using new wire caps. Note witch wire went where. Turn power on and test operation.
Before trying top replace anything, make sure you have power at the motor from the cord. If you have no way to check for power, unplug and change the cord to any other you have around. That will assure that the cord is good or bad.
There's a rubber circle that is the damper between the blades and the motor shaft that rotates. The circle has spokes connecting the outer ring, which the blades screw into, to the inner ring which attaches to the shaft and holds it. If the spokes break you get the symptoms you describe, motor hums but no rotation, but blades can turn manually if you hand turn them them. If this is the case you need to remove and replace the blade mounting ring/damper. (About 25 bucks online)
