Hotpoint fridge is powered up, sounds like liquid is circulating, but not chilling

I have a Hotpoint FFA71 Bottom Freezer. The other day the fridge didn't sound healthy at all, almost like it was breaking down; chugging almost. Now the freezer has defrosted and the freezer high temp button is red. Any suggestions please? I tried turning off the fridge, but no change; not sure what else to do?

Looks like your compressor is busted. the sound that is not healthy is the compressor trying to start, as you have said, chugging... now everything is hot since the compressor is no longer running. have a qualified tech check it to see if the compressor could still be saved...it might just be a dirty condenser.

Hi there. We have hotpoint fridge model number RLFM171. Hope that's correct. The fridge has become loud and one minute freezing up at back with food frozen and then food not seeming to be cold enough. Milk...

Sounds like your defrost cycle has failed. Since the unit is running fine for a while before warming up, this can rule out your circulating fan also when the ice begins to build up, the sound you most likely hear is the fan blades hitting the ice on the coil. Your defrost cycle is operated by a defrost timer or your motherboard depending on the age of your refrigerator. When your refrigerator goes into defrost, it turns on an electric heater that melts the ice from your coil in the freezer. When your defrost time or electric heater fails, it allows ice to build up on the coil in your freezer which blocks airflow which causes your cooling compartments to not maintain temperature. Hope this gives you an idea what to look for and a guide on where to start looking

Where can I get a repair manual for a Hotpoint Fridge

Hi,

First of all, the model number you gave is not complete. But check you defrost system in the freezer, when the refer section stops cooling, your evaporator in the freezer is possibly full of ice and the fan won't move air through ice. When the refer sections fails to cool, check for a fan in the freezer. If it works, you have a defrost problem and is occurs every 3 - 5 days. The unit should defrost once or twice a day. Good Luck

Hotpoint frost free fridge freezer the fridge not working but freezer is

Hi Reginald

Most refrigerator / freezer units chill the fridge area by venting some fraction of the very cold air from the freezer into the fridge compartment through a channel that has a mechanical air valve in it. In this way, it can control the chilled air flow, and aim for the set temperature, all the way down, in some cases, to freezing, or even colder, on the fridge side.

That vent unit, depending on your model, sill be somewhere in the wall that separates the freezer from the fridge. What can happen is that moisture condenses into the louver that slides to control the airflow, it freezes, and then system is stuck, since it's cold on the freezer side, and this keeps the louver frozen stuck. If that is the case, shutting the unit off for a while may recover function, though getting it to where ice is melting in an interior wall may be more risk of food spoilage than you'd want. Otherwise, use a search engine to look for 'how to test freezer / refrigerator vent in make/model', and you'll likely come across all sorts of youtube and step-by-step tutorials.

Good Luck!

Hotpoint ff73 fridge temp unstable some times ok other times not chilling at all temp gauge showing different reading and freezer sometimes drops down to minus 30.in the cabinet

Possible that the thermostat is faulty or there is a weak connection due to frost wearing- out the connection of the thermostat. Shut down the fridge and allow time for the frost to melt off, then check the connections of the thermostat and to the defrost timer, open the freezer rear panel to check this out.
If not the main relay also must be checked, Hope there is no interuption of the mains power.

Water in door does not work but the ice does and when water is pushed you can feel the valve in rear bottom vibrate

There's usually a resevoir of some type in the bottom rear of the fridge to "chill" the water before dispensing. Sometimes this is just a coil of plastic tubing. If your fridge is set too cold or not circulating air properly this resevoir can freeze. If that's the case the only thing you can do is let it thaw. If the resevoir is NOT frozen then the most likely culprit is the water valve. Since you said the valve hums it's pretty safe to say it's getting power. It may be clogged or just not opening when activated.

Frost in freezer fridge warm

Sounds like the circulating fan behind the rear panel inside the freezer section is starting to go bad, This problem is very hard to diagnose because the fan still spins but at a much lower rate than needed to circulate chilled air thru the freezer and the frig. The minimum cost for parts and labor is around $300.00.

My problem is -freezer fine-but fridge has stopped chilling

Sounds like the freezer/refrigerator circulating fan is wearing out. When this fan starts to wear out the fans force is reduced to a point that it will keep the freezer cold, but doesn't have enough force to circulate air thru the refrigerator. The minimum cost to repair this problem is around $300.00

Hotpiont ffm90 fridge not chilling

hi if the freezer appears to work and the fridge if warm, the problem is that the freezer is over frozen and blocking the vents which send cold air into the fridge when required, and the noise is the fan hitting the the ice build up,defrost (switch off)your applinace for at least 36 hours then switch back on,you will then find after the freezer reaches -12 the fridge will then start to go cold.

Chilling Fault

You are probably frozen up which causes the fan to freeze up. Thoroughly defrost the unit...if necessary, stop it for a day or more until all the ice melts. Restart. Cut down on 'window shopping', storing uncovered liquids. Check the door gaskets, clean if necessary or replace.
