Question about Nintendo 64 Console

New gaming parents need help!!! Varied ?'s about Nintendo 64 PLEASE!

We got a Nin64 console, etc. off too...from varied sellers...having loads of trouble getting anything to work.  Screen often says "reading signal" but nothing comes up.  IF a game appears on screen, that cartridge may work, but the others do not.  Then, when trying the original one that had worked once before, it will not come up again.  It's hard to determine what elements are even working or are in error (console?  controller(s)?  cartridge(s)??  What to do???  Are 64's really this fickle?  It seems improbable that there would be so many "not working" elements from several different sources...
Oh...and is there "upgrade" or extra memory cards for the 64?  Do certain games require upgrades on the console to play?
We are pathetically new parents to this, just trying to gift our 8yr. old for his birthday...Please help!

I can only suggest cleaning the terminals were the cartridge goes with a very thin ruler and a thin cloth over the end.

If I order a nintendo 64 console only...what other cables etc. will I need to buy?

You'll need a N64 RCA cable (Game Stop), and an N64 Power supply, your best bet on the power supply will probly be eBay. And of course you'll need a controller.

Console will not load games

Yup it sounds like the mem cart for the console has gone bad then so it will need a new mem cart or try cleaning the gamepacks out with qutips and rubbing alcohal or put them in half way instead because sometimes the console will read it better half way.

Nintendo 64 wont work on my tv

If you are using the original AV plug for the N64, it will probably not work on a new TV.  You must find a new AV plug in a store, or on eBay, Amazon, etc.  This plug must have the red, white, and yellow ends to it.  those are the color coded ends that go into the TV.

Can we play gamecubegames inside the wii console, if so how?

You can do both. With internet you can download Nintendo 64 games on the wii shop channel. For game cube games enter the controller in slot one, enter the game and it's like you don't have a wii!

Note: due to the fact the the wii remote does not have enough buttons ALL N-64 games need a gamecube controller or a classical controller. Game Cube games are not compatible with classical controllers.
