Brother MFC-420CN color ink empty but want to print/copy in B&W

My printer will not print or copy. The first time I saw the message that some of the cartridges were empty or near empty it stopped printing, even though the black is "full" on the ink status check it won't print or copy black only documents.

Also getting "NO DEVICE" on the task bar.

Most color printers are like that. They do not print once one of the color is empty. I suggest that you replace what is empty like John Doe said.Though I have to disagree with the clogging part. Toners and inks only clog when they printer has been idle for some time or exposed to heat. If you need more tips on troubleshooting, you can check here. Good luck!

Brother won't print od do anything is one of the 4 inks are empty so first of all you have to replace whatever is empty, when you remove it it will ask you if you changed it and if it is a new one you will press 1 twice per cartridge, if you put compatible ink in you will clog the ink head up and then be stuffed

My printer refuses to print in Black even if it is full but the color cartdridge Y and B are finished....How to make it print?

The way the Brother MFC-420CN is designed, it will not print at all if any of the ink tanks are empty. They say that this is to prevent damage to the printheads.

There is no workaround.

A lot of inkjet printers have this same restriction, if any tanks are empty, it will not print.

Brother 420CN printer will not print black ink. Have replaced the cartridge and after several cleaning cycles, it still will not print properly. Test Print shows colors are fine but black ink is hit and...

I have a brother MFC 3240C. My Black ink stopped printing(initially printed horizontal faded lines and gradually got worse), the other colors were printing fine. I tried cleaning numerous time( 50 -100 times over 1-2 weeks ). Still no improvement. The way I print now is:
1. I go to Printer Properties
2. Change Media type from "Plain Paper" to "Inkjet Paper".
3. Change Quality to "Photo".

This takes a long time to print 1-2 minutes per page. However, this works for me since this is my Home printer and use it for printing only few pages here are there.

Good Luck

MFC-420CN refuses to recognize or use black ink

The print head is clogged.Try powerful cleaning:
Press menu, then start black copy, then four times arrow-up quickly after another.Machine will be in maintenance mode
(all lights will flash).
Press 7-6-4 and OK (or start-black-copy).
When finished press 7-6-3 then start black copy,
printer will do a power purge.
Leave maintenance mode by pressing 9-9.
If this not help better think about new printer, because cost of repairing this one is profitable.

Brother MC420CN- Black ink cartidge 'near empty' message persists

At 1 of the end sides of the cartage you will see a little window, a beam of light hits that window to determine if you need Ink..Place a small piece of Electric tape over that window and.wallah print, fax and copy away. Brother is a ripoff-A cheap printer that auto-cleans(wastes ink) and locks the whole system claiming your out of Ink or low>>>But this is sure to work! ;)

Will no print black color doc if any other color ink is empty

actually, its not. the reason is, there is a small resovoire (sp?) in the ink cartridges. if you continue to print, the nozzles will clog up, and can cause all the nozzles not to work. even when you do just black, the printer has to clean at times all the nozzles and if your nozzles are empty, air will go into the deep and dry up the excess ink.

if you are going to do primarily black prints, you should get a black and white laser for those uses only.

How can I print copies in black and white from my MFC-420CN using only black ink cartridge. When the other cartridges are empty ?? Solve This

Hello. I have one of these myself, and you cannot, if it detects any of the cartridges empty, it will not allow any printing, copying functions. You may be able to remove the cartridges, shake em up and return them to try, but I believe you are just going to have to get new ones.

Hope that helped, and thank you.

Will not print

naturally will the printer refuse to print if one color is empty to be in safe mode.
This is because of the print head technique which demands a permanent ink supply to prevent drying out:

Brother MFC-420CN All-In-One

unplug maqchine from power. take all carts out. wait 5 minutes. connect machine to power. insert carts as demanded. give the right answer if machine asks if the carts are changed. machine will do some cleaning.

do you use generic ink? in that case you might have clogged the printhead with wrong ink. The ph cant be cleaned anymore.

nevertheless try this (carts should be nearly full!):
press menue then start mono (blue copy) then fourtimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4. Machine will display init_all. press start mono. machine will refill tubes and
ph with fresh ink and do some cleaning. after that press 7 then 6 then 3 and start mono. machine will do a powerpurge.
press zero then 9 to do a quality test print. If it cant do the job leave maintenance by pressing 9 then 9. do the test print manually by pressing ink etc.

If you still do not see any colors the ph is clogged and cant be fixed anymore. It has to be replaced.
