Question about Samsung HCL473W 47" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergance? Turned the TV on last night after having turned it off for maybe 1 hour. When it came back on there was a bowed red line on the very top, mabye a foot wide. The screen showed different colors for all items on the screen. I downloaded the owner's manual and tried to do the auto focus. When I activated that it would only do a little bit of the green, but then did not move on to the red and blue like it used to. Doing the manual convergance, I couldn't get the red to move at all. The four corner crosshairs in red were quite distorted, at an odd angle. I could get the blue to move somewhat but not to completely in line. Did I burn out a chip? Is it something that I can purchase and replace myself?

An STK IC chip = large, soldered in, requires chassis pull.
Replace both IC's for reliability, usually no major alignment
after repair. Sometimes, a resistor or two burns or changes value
This repair usually done by skilled technician.................T.

My 'Philips 51PP9200D/37' TV picture is distorted and bowed along the bottom. There is like a "bubble". It has been there for over a week. It went away for the night last night but is back this AM.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Go to menu look for convergence on menu if it is not on menu then you have a open fuse located next to Flyback Transfomer on deflection board.
