Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GS Router (e125894)

2 Answers

Linksys WRT54GS Our Linksys router (WRT54GS) will allow wireless connection to laptops but keeps dropping the connection with a direct wired PC.  Have updated the firmware with Linksys support.  When the PC is freshly booted, it will connect through the browser....and then drop the connection at some point within 5-30 minutes.  I am able to get mail most of the time.  Have checked connection by going directly from modem to PC and it work fine.  Had the same problem a year ago and had to get a new router.  Have tried numerous plug-unplug, reset, etc.  Just keeps dropping...PC only.  Writing this through one of the laptops.

Re: Linksys WRT54GS

Thank you for the response. It seems that the router was not the problem. After spending much time on the phone with a voice in the Philippines that I fell in love with, I decided to do some other searching around the net and came up with the problem. I had un-installed Zone Alarm Security Suite a few days before. Well, you never really uninstall ZA. There is a file called vsmon.exe that never leaves the computer until you do some backflips and summersaults to get rid of it. I had to re-install ZA and magically, it remembered all my settings, etc. It did however get me back on the problems since. When you uninstall ZA it actually leaves behind the "brain" of the software called TrueVector......going to do more reading and killl the Bast**d once and for all.

Re: Linksys WRT54GS

Have you tried different ports. If the firmware is not eliminating th e problem, then I suspect its the router itself. Try firmware one more time as per linksys suggested, if that does not solve then I suspect you need to buy a new router.
Hope that helped!

I have been running a Linksys BEFSR41 version 2 wired router for over 5 years without any problems. My wife is a teacher and her school p[urchased new laptops recently so I decided to go wireless. Got on...

I think the most likely problem is that both routers are using different IP address ranges and won't allow data to pass between them.
I suggest you use only the Linksys wireless router.

You don't have to reset the router to use it for a wired connection. You will need an Ethernet cord connected directly to the device that you want internet connectivity for. Such as a Desktop or Laptop
I hope this helps. Have good day!

DSL line disconnects on WRT54GS only

Try to change the LAN IP address of your router to by accessing the router's Setup page. You also need to set your Westell modem to "full-bridge mode". You need to ask assistance from your ISP to bridge the modem. After that, set-up the Linksys router to PPPoE then power cycle it.

Linksys WRT54GS not working

  1. First you may need to check if the WLAN or Wireless light on the router is on.
  2. Try connecting your ITouch to a different wireless network.
  3. If you can borrow a wireless ready laptop from a friend, then borrow one.
  4. Check if the laptop will be able to detect a wireless signal from router.
Please update me about this matter.

The lights are on but the linksys is not working

Certainly if the conection directly from the router to the computer is not working then the wireless won't work. So that's where I'd start. Cable connections could be an issue. The connection without the router works I assume. Make sure you are connected correctly. You need ethernet cabling to the ethernet, networking connections to and from the internet device to the computer and into and out of the router. When you get the direct router connections working you can solve your wireless problems.
