Question about Sony Handycam DCR-TRV33 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Gray Horizontal bars in playback mode on Sony DCR-TRV33

I have had this camera since 12/2003 and never cleaned the heads until recently using a dynexMinidv head cleaner as I would encounter 3-4 gray horizontal bars across the lcd screen during playback mode. I contacted Sony and all they had to offer was to reset the camera. The gray bars are still there. Now another problem has popped up and it is that if I record something over something else, the footage that I am recording over still comes up in the place of the gray bars so in effect you are watching two recorded things at the same time. Please help as Sony does not seem to want to. Thanks!

I have a DCR-TRV38 which shows gray horizontal bars during playback of a mini DV tape which used to playback correctly on my old DCR-TRV8.  The only clue I have is the screen says "16 bit" during playback.  I've looked through all the on screen menus for a setting to change but have found none which address this.  I'm thinking that this is some kind of playback mode.

I had the same problem...I was trying to dub off the video onto CD and I had those strange bars. I had the camera plugged in to power on the wall and I yanked out the power to the camera and they went away. Weird.

I have a Canon ZR90A and started noticing horizontal gray lines displaying across the screen when it plays back. What is causing this?

The most common cause of horizontal lines during playback is dirty heads/tape path. If you have a head cleaner tape, try playing it for about 5 to 10 seconds and then try your tape again. Repeat as necessary. Try not to run the head cleaner for long periods of time because you may wear down your heads quicker (cleaning cassette is somewhat abrasive). If you do not own a head cleaning tape, I highly recommend purchasing one. Sony (in my opinion) makes the best miniDV head cleaning cassette. We use this brand in our repair shop and they last for years. I have posted a link to the particular tape I am speaking of. Your local camera/camcorder shop may have these for sale.

Hope this helps you.

Canon camocorder thick gray lines on ever recording

Canon support was of no help. They ****! To fix the problem this is what I figured out.

  1. Before you start filming what you want record or just advance the tape 10 secs or so.
  2. Record/ video whatever you planned.
  3. Now when the thick grey lines come up on play back don't freak out.
  4. Simply rewind the tape to the beginning and record briefly in the blank portion at the beginning (careful not to tape too long as to tape over your intended recording).
  5. Rewind and play the thick grey lines should now be gone.
How did I figure this out just a fluke. No cleaning, no spray pretty simple. At first did not understand it but it works EVERYTIME for me. I'll deal with it until I get around to buying a new HD video camera and it won't be a Canon. Hope this helps.

Dirty video head! Playback newly opened blank tape for five minutes, after that eject, reinsert, playback then eject again five times, these will serve as your video head cleaner, never use "video head cleaning cassette tape" for it will only damage your camera. Most camera has built in video head cleaner installed inside and activates only when you insert, initial play/rec, and ejects a tape. If the problem is still there you need pro fix then.[:0)
