My dehumidifier is 15yrs. old & has started making a loud shrill noise whenrunning(always set on normal). Also, its hot on the backside. The cord is hot also. Iunplugged it.

a change in tone of the noise from a working unit indicates to me that a bit of dust/dirt has built up on the internal fans blades and has caused a imbalance in the fan now , this usually requires a complete disassembly and cleaning out to remedy

If the unit is not running fully, but you have this noise, sounds like the internal fan might be the culprit. Contact your manufacturer for further options.

Yes they should last longer than that, but the sad thing is that they don't make anything like they used too...just check out all the problems in this site for a few minutes...most of the problems should never happen...
Mine does the same thing, for the third time. Seems the plastic fan on mine, lasts a little over a year. Not hard to change, just a bad design on the part. I'm ordering an extra tis time, to save on freight.
