Live messenger contact cannot see me

when connected during a live messenger call, i can see myself in my webcam monitor window. I can see and hear the person I am speaking with. They can hear me, but they cannot see me, even though my webcam appears to be working at my end because as I said I can see myself in the webcam monitor.
