It would seem that your computer has not recognised the USB device which is probably a USB2 device. If you know how to find Device Manager you will see whether it has been initialised. If it is there but has a yellow ? then its relevant driver has not been installed or there is a conflict. Delete it and then plug it in again to see if Windows finds it.
