Question about Philips 60PP9401 60" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence / Short? 60PP9401

Problem started a few days ago where the picture would split into green, semi-normal, and purple sections (from top to bottom). problem was exacerbated occasionaly by horizontal lines/snow. During intellisense, it was obvious that the problem was with the green (longest to align and/or horizontal lines). intellisense would fix the problem about half of the time. if the tv was aligned with intellisense a few times before input was ever turned on, the tv would work great for hours. problem finally became impossible to avoid today, and now the tv is chirpping.
SO, Convergence board...IC's...Green bulb...what am i looking at as the problem? i have a friend who solders all types of circuitry for a living, so i believe she can fix the problem if i can just swap out the component. I know i need to get hold of the service manual, but is there anyway to tell what my problem is specifically from this description?

First off, thank you so much for the advice

Is the STK394-160E (CZ01341) an upgrade to the stock
part? i was a little unclear about that, and is this the part you had
    in mind?
    http://www.partstore.com/Part/Hitachi+Lt...

Also, is there a simple disassembly procedure, or should i find the service manual just in case?

  • dragonxbs Dec 19, 2007

Ok, so i disassembled the tv to find that there were STK392-150's installed. should i still go with the STK394-160E's or should i choose a different chip? (i'm thinking this problem has been addressed on this tv at least once already)

anyways here are some reference pictures

    Info
    Convergence Board
    STK's
    Blinking Lights

The last picture is in reference to the "chirping noise." the outside left and i believe the inside right lights are blinking in tune with the "chirping."

  • dragonxbs Dec 19, 2007

Here are some pictures of the STK's soldering.

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

As you can see, there is quite a bit of flux, so i'm certain that these have been swapped at least once. is there anything special about that wire in pictures 7 and 8? is that there normally?

  • dragonxbs Dec 19, 2007

Are there any other STK394 #'s that would be compatible? like the 210's or 250's. the only reason i ask is because the 160's are hard to find. not to mention that i would like to make sure that this will fix the problem first,i.e. i would rather install $8-10 parts rather than $40 to find out that something else is wrong. Thanks for the help Terryfic!

  • dragonxbs Dec 21, 2007

i was going to check the resistors when i had my friend resolder the board.

one last question for now, that little "patch" wire in pictures 7 and 8 (also visible in 1-3)...any speculation as to what that is for? was it there originally, or was it added in? im assuming i should leave it be when i repair this.

Thank You so much for the knowledge Terryfic

  • dragonxbs Dec 29, 2007

ok, so i've got the parts and am ready to start, but where are the B+ feed resistors and how many are there? i can't find the "B" section of the board.

  • dragonxbs Dec 29, 2007

on the IC side? or on the backside of the heatsink? none in that area look any different than the rest/what i'm used to seeing. should i go about with a multimeter to confirm or will visual be satisfactory? thanks for the technical support T....you are a lifesaver!

  • dragonxbs Jan 06, 2008

You are a gentleman and a scholar sir! hooked everything back up last night and it works like a charm!

  • dragonxbs Jan 08, 2008

ok so, another question to be pesky...the grey title bars that show up in 16x9....is there any way to change those? at all? not to mention, that the tv seems to like to default to 16x9.

  • dragonxbs Jan 10, 2008

i was just wondering if i could get into a service menu or something to change the color of the title bars in 16x9. and yes it does default to 16x9 everytime the tv is turned off and sometimes when inputs are changed

  • jxmoore Jul 04, 2008

I replaced the ic's to 394-160e, my picture returned. It now has a blue ghosting, used the intellisence button, which did not align the colors. Checked resitors when ic's were replaced they were good. How do I get the colors realigned. Model 60pp9401 philps hdtv.

First thing to know = your set is Hitachi made with Philips
name on it....not a bad thing, just good to know.....
Parts to change out = STK392-110 IC's sub to upgrade
STK394-160E part # CZ 01341 , change both for reliability...
Then activate Intellisense and see if all is well........T.

    Correct upgrade & source......

Take a look inside...make good notes....don't force anything

if you feel more comfortable with manual..no a bad idea...T.

  • Vista Electronics Dec 17, 2007

    sic...not a bad idea.....

  • Vista Electronics Dec 19, 2007

-150 is an unreliable sub for STK392-110,as you are observing.

CZ 01341 upgrade is what I use every week...more tomorrow..T.

  • Vista Electronics Dec 20, 2007

My recommendation is always OEM ( Original Equipment Manufacturer ) quality or better on all parts unless you know

from experience a generic second grade will hold up....in your case, you could go back to the original STK392-110's, but....

use name brand = Hitachi sub STK394-160E = CZ 01341 upgrade.... or NAP,Toshiba,Panasonic...all first quality if mfr.

name is on it...of course, going to be pricey !! The cheaper the

no name generic is,the lower the grade = second, third, all junk.

As far as -210 or -250,they are not being Mfr cross referenced

at this time....I use Andrews Electronics as my authority / source.....I don't experiment or re-design..that's for engineers.

Next related subject = have you checked B+ feed resistors

    for burn / over-heat damage??

  • Vista Electronics Dec 21, 2007

The little green jumper wire stays....un-solder the end attached

to the IC ( last pin ) then change the IC and solder wire back in place....

  • Vista Electronics Dec 29, 2007

Resistors are close to IC's = if none look over-heated,you are ok to go.........T.

  • Vista Electronics Dec 29, 2007

Usually one or two watt.....don't recall which side...if none look

burnt so that you can't read the value on the body of the resistor

    then you are probably ok...............................T.

  • Vista Electronics Jan 07, 2008

Way to go! Thanks for "listening"........

  • Vista Electronics Jan 08, 2008

Not sure if you mean change format.....or ? Gray side panels

are there when you chose normal format....should stay on your

selection unless AC is lost when set is powered down.......T.

  • Vista Electronics Jan 11, 2008

Sorry, I am lost this time............................T.

This is along shot but you may have picked up a virus a few months ago, do a full system scan, also download malwarebytes anti-malware and do a full scan, if nothing shows up consider a full windows operational install, I have found in some cases it fixes the video problem.

I have a phillips 60 in rear projection tv model #60PP9401. and it is exhibiting the appearance of double vision, can this be fixed economically

Projection TV sets have two very common problems oulined below.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • No Audio/Video - TV Makes Chirping Sound

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Blurry picture, some color is off

It sound like your tv needs convergence repair. There is a couple of possible causes to this problem on this particular model. One will be a missing voltage due to a loose conection on the fly back transformer, it may cause a fuse to open; it may also be a bad convergence power supply module, or a bad convergence module.

Green semi-circle of lines on Samsung 55" HDTV (projection)

I believe i have the same problem myself. When my TV is on any of the Component Inputs without my DVD player turned on i usually get the normal green screen. But now that is a dip in the green at the top of the screen from the top left to almost the top right and black pushing down on the dip. Almost like a green curtain was sagging at the top and you can see the black behind it. It does this on every input and distorts every picture you see. The distorted picture has all the green slightly off from where the rest of the picture is and where the dip at the top of the screen is there is somtimes purple instead of black.

I know the basics of how the picture gets onto the screen and its my guess that the Green "gun" for lack of a better term and somhow come loose, or been missaligned to a great extent. I would love to find an answer to this problem, and anyones best guess as to how much a repair man will charge, just so i know the ballpark.

Phil, from your description it sounds like your convergence IC`s are about to fail, the intermittent off/on cycle is because as they heat up there drawing too much current, the bowed collapse tells me it`s the vertical convergence IC that`s the culprit. You need to get a tech out asap to fix this or they could short and take out the power supply as well and that`s just mooore money to fix it, hope this answers your question, BMW Rider

This set uses two convergence packs that go bad and take with them a resistor or two. You will need a repar shop to get it fixed. If it's over 10 years old, I would suggest getting a new HDTV set as these sets can start going downhill fairly rapidly past this age. If that's not an option, the repair could run over $350 IMHO.
