Nice camera! I have one too, and really enjoy it. I suspect you are running the original firmware. There is a new firmware version 1.11 that specifically addresses this problem. The download and instruction page is below:

To your question about why the battery messages didn't start from day one, I don't know. I imaging it may have to due with the battery's ability to hold a full charge when it is no longer new. Regardless, this is how it happened to everyone, so I didn't worry about it. I was just glad that Nikon fixed the problem.
The text that you are seeing on top of the image can be removed by pressing top or bottom of the wheel to the right of the screen. You will have to do this repeatedly, as there are several screens that will display before the text is cleared. Some of the info is very useful, but it is not required to display it. If the text ever shows up again, simply tap the top or bottom of the wheel to clear it.
The firmware update process looks daunting, but if you take it one step at a time, you'll probably find it isn't that difficult. If you still don't want to do it - maybe you can download the firmware to a formatted SD card and bring it & the D80 to a camera store. I would think someone there would be eager to help you out.
If you found the answer to your first question about the battery message helpful, could you please take a moment to rate it? Thank you and enjoy your D80!

Should be your battery. I encountered this problem with generic (non-Nikon) batteries. If you are using an original Nikon battery, have it replaced. This should solve your problem

Thanks for your response. Mhh ... I quickly glanced thru the instructions to download. It seems bit complicated.
But I Was wondering why I am seeing this problem now and not a year ago. If the firmware needs to be upgraded, then the problem should have been there since day 1 right?
Also, while I am viewing the images, the summary of text shows up on the image. How do I get rid of this?
