Washing machine won't stop filling--is the WLC defective?

Hi.

I've got a Whirlpool top loading washing machine that won't stop filling with water. I checked the Water Level Control; when I put a drinking straw around it & blow, it clicks & the water stops filling. However when I reattach the pressure hose, it doesn't seem to stop filling. I verified that the pressure hose is attached properly (I even snipped the ends off to ensure a snug fit). I also blew into the hose & confirmed that there were no obstructions.

I would love any help/advice on what the most likley problem might be. Is it that the Water Level control is not working properly? ie although it works fine when I blow into it, it is not sensitive enough to react to the pressure from the water filling up? As an aside, I took the machine apart because one of the suspension springs had broken & I had to reanchor it at a different place since the original hole had been torn open. Is it possible that this might affect the water level control (the water was filling fine before I opened the machine up).

Thanks in advance.

The 3 likeliest causes of your problem are:
  1. Bad pressure switch (water level control)-It may react to your straw but the range it finally kicks off is higher than the highest possible water level.
  2. Bad sensing line-The plastic tube may have a pinhole leak caused by abrasion while your suspension system was out of order or it may just leak out the air. Place a small screw operated hose clamp on the hose where it attaches to the pressure switch. Place a finger over one end of the plastic hose and blow in the other as you submerge the hose under water to check for leaks. Replace if necessary.
  3. Clogged reservoir at tub end of sensing line-clean out with thin blade screwdriver. Sometimes grease or undissolved detergent accumulates in this area and blocks the pressure from sending a proper signal.
One of the above three should resolve your problem. Obviously, replace the pressure switch as a last resort after checking steps 2 and 3.

Good Luck
