Lens protracts when turned on, but lens cover won't open. I have tried a moving the corner of a piece of paper around the inside in case there is some debris stuck in side, but no job. Any suggestions are most welcome. I have just started a course in photography so that i could learn to use this camera better !! Help

first take paper out of tray and see that there are not bend corners, take cassette out push a piece of cardboard (folder thickness is perfect) half way trough registration rollers "after feed rollers" that should take care of it, if not call tech. to go into "simulation" and trouble shoot.
Lens covers are delicate things. A bit of dust or dirt inside and the the springs can't do their job. When cleaning doesn't work, to repair this I remove the lens cover and shorten the springs by cutting off a bit and then reattaching them. A small bit of mollyd to lubricate helps too. never use oil or silicone.
The message Unable to Print (followed by a two character code) will appear on the display for one of the following reasons:
- Dirty encoder strip
- Foreign object, such as a paper clip or ripped piece of paper, stuck in the machine
- Mechanical malfunction
The most common cause of the issue is dirt on the encoder strip. Clean the encoder strip by doing the following:
CLEAN THE ENCODER STRIP
NOTE: The images shown below are from the representative product. The customer's model may look different from the picture.
1. Locate a lint free cloth such as a T-shirt, DRY eye glass cleaner cloth, DRY monitor cloth or wash cloth.
DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF PAPER PRODUCTS (EX: paper towel, tissue paper, napkin, filter, news paper etc.) This will help ensure the dirt is removed from the encoder strip.
CHECK FOR FOREIGN OBJECTS & PAPER JAMS
2. After thoroughly cleaning the encoder strip, look inside the machine and in the two corners for jammed paper or foreign objects and remove them if any are found. Pieces of paper may be jammed under the print head.
If the print head is locked to the right side of the machine, press and hold the STOP/EXIT key for 5 seconds. This will cause the print head to move automatically to the middle of the machine and allow you to look for debris in the right corner.
3. Leave the scanner OPEN and turn the machine around so you are looking at the back of the machine.
4. Open the Jam Clear Cover and look inside the machine for paper. Remove any jammed paper that appears; then close the Jam Clear Cover and turn the machine back around to the front.
5. Gently close the scanner cover and verify the error message cleared from the display.
If you cleaned the encoder strip ONCE and the message continues to appear on the display, clean the encoder strip again. It is common to clean the encoder strip multiple times to resolve the issue.
If you cleaned the encoder strip at least TWICE and the message continues to appear on the display, unplug the machine from the power outlet for 2 seconds and plug it back in to cycle the power.
TEST THE MACHINE
NOTE: After a paper jam has been cleared, the Brother machine may complete a 2 minute cleaning cycle to remove paper dust from the nozzles before printing.
A stuck automatic lens cover is a fairly common
problem, but it is normally easy to fix. A single grain of sand jamming
the cover mechanism is normally the culprit, and you want to try to
dislodge it:
METHOD 1:
Point the camera straight down into a vacuum hose (while the vacuum is
on) and tap it around the insides. This will help to **** the dirt out
instead of pushing it in further like compressed air might do.Also
turn the camera on and off constantly while doing this.
METHOD 2:
1) Try blowing lots of compressed air around the lens cover
to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't
want to heat up the camera). Use no heat mode if possible.
2) Slide a
thin strip of paper between the lens cover shutters and the outer
support ring. Work it around 360 degrees to clear out any debris that may
be in there.
3) With the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap
the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by
powering the camera on and off. Repeat the above three steps several
times. If repeated tries don't work then it may be necessary to open the lens barrel to access the
lens cover mechanism. The lens cover mechanism is usually accessible for many cameras without needing to open up the camera case.
Remove the paper following the procedure below.
(1) Slowly pull the paper out, either from the Rear Tray or from the Paper Output Slot, whichever is easier.
If the paper tears and a piece remains inside the machine, turn the machine off, open the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover) and remove it.
Be careful not to touch the components inside the machine.
After removing all paper, close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover), and turn it back on.
If you cannot pull the paper out, turn the machine off and turn it back on. The paper will be ejected automatically.
(2) Reload the paper in the machine, and press the OK button on the machine.
easy! charge the battery. With power off, whack the base of the camera against the palm of your hand four or five times.wait five minutes, turn camera on and whack the side of the camera nearest the lens against the palm of your hand.then whack the base again and the lens should pop out.Worked for me!!!

You can open it up, but only as a very last resort. The above procedures usually work if you try them enough. But for those particularly nasty stuck mechanisms, here's an example repair on a Canon Powershot A400 (do this at your own risk):
