I have a Tatung lcd flat screen monitor tv. The television comes on there is sound but the screen is black. The tv is 5 years old. What would cause this?

Failed backlight inverter circuits or the power supply for the backlight circuits has failed, you need to open it up and inspect the power suply first, look for bad caps with leaking/bulging tops. Post back what you find so we can guide you further.

I have a samsung 15 inch LCD TV. When I turn the

kcs36dd, Lcd TV's also have, just like LCD monitors, an AC to DC voltage power supply. It is called a "switch-mode-power-supply" and generates the DC voltages required for all the other important electronic circuits inside the unit. 98% of all 14" to 22' lcd panels have backlighting provided by "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" (CCFL) that produce WHITE LIGHT so you can see all the pretty colors that the glass LCD PANEL produces on the screen. The INVERTER circuit requires 12vdc to 20vdc from the SMPS to convert into 500 to 1000v ac to light-up the CCFL's. IF the SMPS detects a FAULT CONDITION with itself or the INVERTER it will go into what is known as FULL or PARTIAL SHUTDOWN MODE to try and save itself from a catastrophic, nonrecoverable failure. e.g. sparks, smoke, fire. lmistyrel on I could give you more assistance if you had provided following informatiom.
1. How old is the unit? 2, Approximate total "ON" hours unit has? 3.Has unit failed within the WARRANTY period? 4. Will SAMSUNG do a cash+old unit swapout because of PREMATURE FAILURE? 4. Do you know enough to do a unit TEARDOWN and inspection to possibly determine ROOT CAUSE of SMPS/INVERTER failure? 5. Can you handle a soldering iron and solder to make DIY repairs to unit. 6. Since your unit is just a little more complex than a LCD MONITOR, have toy viewed on YOUTUBE short video clips of "LCD monitor disassembly" or "LCD monitor repair" for the most common cause of BLACK screen complaints? If further assistance is required do additional post to original. 12fixlouie aka louie12fix on fixya

Monitor sizes are measured on the diagonal from corner to corner.

A 17" LCD may have a screen width of 12 inches measured from side to side.

If you are measuring a old style CRT monitor (Cathode Ray tube) the visible screen area will be about an inch less as there is about 1/2 inch of plastic frame holding the CRT in the chassis. The manufacturer can advertise the actual size of the screen regardless of how much is actually visible to display information.

If you are talking about software not utilizing all the available screen area to display the image, that is an issue with the people writing the software code not keeping up with the changes in hardware.

In the past year or two, most displays have switched to the 16:9 and 16:10 wide aspect ratios while most web content is still written for the 4:3 old style aspect ratio. Eventually, software developers will catch up with cusrrent hardware.

Hp flat screen monitor

It's probably your dc power supply.

Mine would blank just 2-3 seconds after power-on.
I pulled this monitor out of the garbage - someone threw it away. I found any old 12vdc power supply I had laying around (1 from an hp scaner 1250mA, another rated at 600mA) neither could supply the current (amps) required to run the backlights, therefore backlights shutdown, monitor goes blank--monitor stilled powered on, but black.

I tried all of the disassembly, re-solder various solder joints on the LCD Inverter board and removing the heat/magnetic shield from inside the back cover of the monitor. Nothing worked.

I bought a Segate 80gb external hard disk drive that came with a 12vdc power supply, looks like a typical laptop power supply, rated at 3A (3000mA). Plugged it to the monitor, it powered up, and it works flawlessly.
