Question about Tower Desa Natural Gas Heater - 25,000 BTU

Desa Natural Gas Wall heater 18,000 BTU

The pilot light goes on and when you hold down the start button but after a minute or so when you release the button, it goes out. I am pretty sure it is 3/16" pilot tube that needs to be replaced but what do you think?

It is in my Garage and it is about 10 years old but really not used that much. I used to have it on low in the cold months of Jan, Feb but then I just had it turned on when I worked in the garage (I have a work area). Then a year ago, when I pushed on the start, as long as I held it down, it was on but when I released the button and turned it on it went out. Gas is coming out but will not stay lite. I cleaned everything but that did not work.

Hi i think you a right on the money with the pipe.
It could just be that their is a build up of dust causing the problem as this can happen if the unit hasnt been used often let me know how often its used and also the age thanks

Hi if the pilot light lights then you know that the pilot light works ok so then the problem must be a gas flow problem.
the pipe dont need to be blocked fully to cause this fault as any drop in pressure will cause it to either not light or to go out it does this as safety feature to make sure the supply cuts off instead of filling room with gas.
If you cant find fault yourself its best to call someone out who can test pressure for you.
It could even be a faulty valve because with the temperature around the unit changing form warm to cold whilst it is not working this can cause slight differences in the valves controlling the flow of gas.
So if your sure youve checked pipes and they are free from dust etc then call someone out its not worth messing with as can be extremely dangerous if anything goes wrong after you take apart also they will have proper equipment to test the valves and set the correct pressure.
Without this equipment you wouldnt be able to test the pressure or adjust the pressure.
Its not worth messing with unless you have equipment to test the pressure and also to test to see if their is any leeks because if thei is a leak this would also cause it not to light

Pilot light will stay lit as long as i hold down the knob, but when knob released, light goes out....... i have a wall mount model# GWRN30t

Normally when you release the knob it work the same as a two way switch ,which mean gas will stop flowing through the small pilot channel and will flow to large channel where it will continue to burn.
In your case, you have to strip down the regulator switch and look where the gas passage is glogged.

Pilot low when release button, goes out after turn on

Try replacing the pilot generator which is in the pilot assembly. It is the piece with a silver cable coming out of it and that cable splits open into a red and white wire at the gas valve, That piece holds the valve open once it is hot enough and is likely not putting out enough voltage to do its job.

Pilot lights but when ignition pops back up the flame goes out

will either be the unitrol control box or the thermocouple, when you push down you are holding two magnets together and waiting for a small charge to be created from the probe in the flame , if this is not working you have no charge and the magnets won;t stick to allow the valve to open, change the thermo and see if that works first, its way cheaper than a new controler

Lighting a glo warm heater

Is this a new heater or have you had it awhile? If new, yuo may have air in the line that will need to be bled out. The heater has a gas valve with a pilot setting on it. Make sure the gas is turned on. Turn the knob to the pilot setting and depress the handle. Holding it down and at the same time, press down on the red button that sparks. You may have to repeat this a few times. Once the pilot lights, continue to hold down on the pilot knob for about 30 seconds. When uou release the knob, the flame should stay o. If it does not, replace the thermocouple. Once the pilot flame is steady, turn the gas valve knob to on.
