Question about Standard (CRT) Televisions

TV intermittently turns off, then on, showing initial menu

TV is @ 15 years old. Has started turning off and then back on intermittently. Shows initial menu when it turns back on. Had a repairman in who had it for more than a week and now it does it less frequently, but still is turning off/on. More irritating than anything else, but I'm worried there may be a hazard in continuing to use the TV

Probably time to put the poor thing to rest. This is your chance to move into the HD world. That's exciting!

Black rectangular box shows on screen

This is simple: set in the closed caption menu (some cable boxes also have it) called TEXT. Look in the menu and turn it off first in the set and also in the box used if used for signal.

Odd feature and never really took off--designed so some channels like PBS etc could broadcast text.

TV Flashing from Channel to Channel Non-Stop. Problem with the RCA F32689 32" TV My TV started jumping from channel to channel non-stop. There's no picture or sound - only channel numbers changing...

If still under guarantee take it back.
If not this sounds like a workshop job. If more than five years old (the TV, not you!) and you can afford it, junk this set and get a new one.

RCA tv's have lately been having a EPROM chip problem( it controls , power on/off , channel up/down , mute , menu , ect... this is happening to other models as well
you can leave it unplugged for a couple of days and then it might work for a while but it will get worse untill it is repaired

Hacker code maybe

Hi Karyne1975,

Initially, I would venture that the Parental Lock has been engaged and was set to the lowest level meaning the TV will not allow any channel to be displayed, they are all blocked.

To remove the parental lock, proceed to the Main Menu display, press on LEFT or RIGHT arrow key till Parental Guide Setting is highlighted. Before you can access, an entry code is required. The factory default is 1225 (that is if it has not been changed). Upon gaining entry, press on UP or DOWN and/or LEFT or RIGHT arrow keys to turn any entry in the MPAA-Rating and/or the TV-Rating to show U (unblock). Additionally, it may also be necessary to turn the RATE SETTING to OFF. Exit.

To my knowledge Parental Lock is not disengaged by full hard reset or unplugging from mains.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Sony Wega KV-27FS100 RANDOMLY Turns itself ON

You said around 4pm TV is switched on everyday. Check in menu options any on-timer and off-timer is changed. If it is not there is a problem in microprocessor section. EEPROM ic malfunction also shows these type of symptoms. But it can be done by Technical persons only. This is not a major problem. This is due to surge current and lightening like that.

RCA F32665 Shows only gray screen, sound works.

You have a problem in the video circuit. Any video that comes into the set is not getting to the picture tube. The menus come from the system control microprocessor. This shows that the input at the picture tube itself is working. Also you system control is working. The signal would have to be traced through the set to find out where the loss is originating.
