CONVERGENCE WE ARE EXPERIENCING RED AND GREEN GHOSTING LINES ON HITACHI REAR PROJECTION TV 53SDX89B. DOES THE CONVERGENCE FIX DIFFER FROM MODEL TO MODEL?

WE HAVE TRIED THE MAGIC FOCUS A FEW DIFFERENT TIMES WITH NO CHANGE TO THE SCREEN. I HAVE NOT LOCATED A CONVERGENCE FIX SPECIFICALLY FOR THE 53SDX89B MODEL. ANY DIRECTION WOULD BE APPRECIATED =)

We are having the same issue with the Hitachi 53SDX89B TV- red and green bowing from top of screen. The bowing spans about 6" in height, red on top of green to the middle of the TV; bottom half is shadowed red behind green.
After running the Magic Focus, a 3 flashes on the bottom right of the screen.
We'll need step-by-step instructions (in laymen terms please!) on how to find out the cause of the problem~ the least expensive way would be most appreciated!
    Thank you in advance.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Solution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Yes on some models, have you tried the Magic focus after the set gets warmed up?

My Hitachi 53SDX89B is showing double. It has a bow effect going on that shows red and green

It is a convergence problem (see attached photos) and total parts cost if you can do it yourself will be under 25 dollars--I know where to buy the parts at the best cost and how to do the repair.

Let me know if I can assist you with a comment here and if this information helped, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Vertical lines and 3d ghosting

If the problem is exactly like before one of the protect resistors is bad.

The color bands denote value in resistance and usually it will be a 1.2, 1.5 or 2.2 ohm resistor. You check them with a ohm meter, like checking a fuse--any that has no reading across it is gone.

Usually they will be discolored but sometimes they open so fast they do NOT discolor.

There are only about twelve of them and many are higher values--150 ohms or more==always it is a low value resistor that opens--it is what it is there for--a chip shorts in some way and the resistor opens to protect the power supply that feeds it.

Looking is not always enough, you have to check them. If this is helpful a rating would be appreciated as I do this here for free.

I am available to assist you if you need it.

Hitachi 53SDX89B green and red shadows

I have the same thing and just bought a replacement being delivered this Wed. It kills me to just discard it but I have looked on the boards and don't easily find the convergence IC to replace. Not a tech by any means but it looks like parts should be under $100 IC's seem to around between $20-30 each and I believe there are two of them. I have a link on how to replace them on another model but unless I am blind they are not on the same place on our model. FWIW here is the link if you want to check it out http://home.earthlink.net/~oleg.filippov/ConvergenceFix.htm.

I also can not take credit for the link and would gladly give the people credit but I can not remember where I found it........another senior moment lol

Red Lines on Screen

Dave, HMMMM Dual pictures This is a problem that every projection TV runs into at least once or twice in its lifetime. Its the old convergence IC falure thingy. These IC's go bad and should be replace all at once. These are not consumer replaceable unless you have had training in the electronics or TV repair fields. Please call out a pro to assist you with this repair as A TV is not the place to experiment in because of the HI voltage and saftey issues. Good Luck
