Question about Olympus WS-100 Digital Voice Recorder

1 Answer

Files do not appear on PC

When I plug in the recorder the folder for the recorder opens, but I am denied access to playing them. Is this scenario a codec problem? I thought it may be a problem with my computer and tried it on another computer. Now the files are not appearing at all. The folder opens but it is empty. The files are not recognized by the computer. The files are still on the recorder and plays, but I have no way of transferring them to my computer.

This is the only place I found online for troubleshooting for the Olympus recorder. Doesn't Olympus even have it's own support network???

Re: files do not appear on PC

The computer not support the file format. use DSS player to convert the file format to wav and then to any other audio format. or use the SONY LAS VEGAS 7.0 OR 8.0 to convert it into required format.
best of luck.

I have a RCA VR5320R digital voice recorder. My voice recordings are stored on the recorder, under folder "A," but when I attach the recorder to my computer, eventhough the device shows up under...

Your best bet is to play the recordings through the headphone connector to a pc audio line-in connector and capture the audio using something like Audacity. Then output them using audacity to mp3 to play on your mp3 player.

These units are notorious for their failing USB feature.

Cant open or view folders on computer

There are many steps in installing Digital Wave Player on VISTA, it is important to follow every step since installing Digital Wave Player on VISTA is dependent on this process.
Install a VN recorder on VISTA
1. Make sure the device has been uninstalled in device manager
2. Make sure the old version of digital wave player is uninstalled.
{Delete Temp files in Internet Explorer --Tools--Internet Options --Delete Files-- Delete offline content--OK}
3. Install digital wave player (The newest Version).
4. Install the 2.1.4 vista update
5. Restart the computer.
6. Plug in the VN recorder to the USB port and turn the recorder on.
"Found new hardware" will appear,
7. install automatically.
This may fail, if you see VNUSB device, skip the final steps and proceed to Digital Wave Player to Download files from the Digital Voice Recorder.
If you will see "Other devices" listed in Device manager with "digital voice recorder" underneath it.
8. Right click on the "digital voice recorder"
9. Select update driver from the pop up menu.
10. Choose the browse computer Option
11. In the next window browse to the location that you downloaded the Digital Wave Player application to
12. Click Next
A security warning window will open,
13. Choose "install anyway" and the device will install.
When successfully installed you will see the "other devices" disappear and a VNUSB device with a "VN series device"
underneath it appear at the bottom of the device manager list. There will be a blue question mark next to the device. At this point you can close the device manager and the properties window and open Digital Wave Player. You will see the recorder listed underneath the recorder folder and be able to download and use the program normally now.

Unable to transfer recording from File B

All files should be set for transfer when using the Olympus software.  There is a way you can check folder B in my computer by locating the program folder where the olympus software resides.  If folder B is empty, the recording could have landed in A, C, or D folder.

Locked file ?

The folder lock can oly be solved by chosing the option "format" in the sub-menu. But please copy the *.dss - files still resting at your card at your harddisk first.

When the recorder finishes the format procedure, all folders will be unlocked again.

The "Read-Only-Failure" will occur again at recorders with differend user profiles, when you put the switched-off recorder into the docking station first and switch the power button to "on". So avoid this constellation!

Harbinger Decoder

Okay, I'll try and help you out...
1. Create new folder on desktop called 'recordings' or something similar i.e. easy to remember!
2. Connect unit to PC via USB cable and turn on the unit. If you slide the HOLD switch to the on position, you should get a message saying "PC LINK" on the display.
3. Locate the recording(s) that you want to decode. I don't know what model of denpa you have, so I can't be sure, but there are normally four folders (A, B, C, and D - there may also be an MP3 folder). The recordings are accessed by double-clicking my computer, then the removable disk icon that appeared when you plugged in and turned on, and then opening the folders that are present which contain the recording(s) you wish to decode.
4. Identify the recording(s) you wish to decode and copy them to your newly created desktop folder (right click the file/copy and then go into new folder and paste there).
5. Once you have copied the file(s) you want to decode, open the Converter program (programs - harbinger converter - converter 1.4).
6. In the program window click on the magnifying glass in the top box (source file) and browse to your new folder.
7. Select the file you wish to decode (I think you have to do them one at a time - just repeat the process for each one following these steps).
8. In the lower box (output file) enter the name you wish to use to identify the file so you can find it. Then click on the magnifying glass for the output file and browse to your newly created folder (this will then be where your converted files will be sent on decoding).
9. Click the 'decode' button in the lower left corner of the program window (I think it shows a picture of two different sized cogs side by side).
10. The file should then be decoded from its .hgl format to a (new) .wav format with whatever name you gave it. From here, you should be able to listen to the file on your PC using any common media player (i.e. Winamp/Media Player etc.) or recode it as an .mp3 if you want to save some hard disk space on your computer.
Repeat the process from step 6 for each file you want to decode.
Hope that helps and good luck.
