Hi, Just bought a new quadra d2 500 Gb (already have three LaCie HD plugged into my G5) but the mac at first didn't want to recognize it : I tried daisy-chaining it through FW800 then direct FW400 but still doesn't mount on the desktop. I tried then to daisychain it through FW400 and now the computer tells me that the volume can't be read by my mac giving me three options : 1-ignore 2-eject 3-initialize I obviously pressed initialize, the disk utility open but don't let me do anything else then erase the disk. After what I read on the user guide, LaCie HDs don't look so macfriendly to me!!! So should I go further and erase or should I send it back as it's the first time I use it?
If as you noted THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU USED THE DRIVE, you have no data on the drive to loose or recover.
Especially if you believe your actions may have corrupted the formatting of the drive, reformatting may be the appropriate response and could yield a working drive eliminating many return headaches. However if this does not seam reasonable contact with LaCie as to why the drive did not work directly out of the box may be appropriate. (I did confirm in the drive specs that the drive should have been formatted correctly for an apple computer -- windows users need to reformat the drive before they can use it )

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.
Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.
I had this same problem. I you are experiencing this problem and you have a Mac. Go to the LaCie web site there is a firmware update for this drive. Download the firmware update application from the LaCie website, start it and follow the directions. It should fix the problem.
look into Disk Warrior...its a hundred bucks, but it is a miracle worker of sorts and might fix everything for you.
the frustrating thing about DW besides its $100, is it takes less than a minute to fix problems I would fret over for weeks
Scrap LAcie!! Sounds like in this case, it may have been jostled around during shipping. None the less, Lacie drives are nothing more than bricks waiting to fail. Go Western Digital, but if oyu can, zip straight for Seagates!!!! Professional grade!! ALways check the cables, the ones that come with them are bottom bin cables, made by little singapore children with no fingers..... Invest in a good cables...a drive is only as good as the weakest datalink.
